WILLIAM GEOFFREY THORPE was born at South Melbourne on the 3 September 1920. He worked as a an analytic chemist and laboratory assistant until joining the military. He had at least 2 separates enlistments in the Army. The first time he enlisted at High Street, Preston on the 4 June 1941 and was allocated service number V43770 He attained the rank of Lance Corporal with the 57/ 60 Battalion. He then re-inlisted in Casino, New South Wales on the 14 August 1942. He was given service no VX 87480. His father, who was liviing at 68 Bruce Street, Preston at this time, was named as next of kin as William was un-married.

He was killed in New Guinea on the 30 May 1945, aged 24.

William is buried at the Port Moresby Bomana War Cemetery-C2.A.27
