12. Jessie Mary Angus 1911

PARENT 11. JAMES HYATT ANGUS

JESSIE MARY ANGUS was born at Colac in 1911.She apparently loved music and was said to have a lovely voice.

Jessie studied music, but as with most women of her era, her own interests became secondary to those of her children and husband.

She married DONALD ANDREW HOSE at the Fairfield Park Presbyterian Parish, 30 Rathmines Road, Fairfield on the 3rd of December 1938. Donald was the son of Andrew Hose and Susan Elizabeth Rankin. He was born at Camperdown in 1908.

Donald was a good footballer in his youth and played for Heytesbury in the Western District. He was also the captain and coach for the team.

Donald also played the drums but had little time for this pastime after his marriage. He served in the Second World War in the Middle East and Tobruk with the 2nd Eight Field Regiment-9th Division.

After his return to Australia Don and Jessie managed a guest house, 'Sea Foam', along with Don's parents, Andrew and Susan. Unfortunately this business lost money due to their over generous natures and the harsh economic climate of the time. Don then went into fishing like his father before him, but was not, unfortunately very successful.

This meant that times were difficult for both parents and children alike.

Don also suffered from war neurosis, which required treatment at the Repatriation Hospital, Heidelberg, Victoria. The family finally left Port Campbell in July 1962 and moved to Port Fairy. There Don was able to find employment with the Port Fairy council, tending the Port Fairy South Park as a part-time caretaker, which supplemented his fishing income.

Jessie was employed as a cook. She had begun her apprenticeship in Port Campbell, in the guesthouse and then the local pub doing breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as caring for her husband and children. She had a hard and rather sad life, She lived for her family and very rarely mixed outside the family group. She had worked so hard for most of her married life, that shortly after her retirement at age 60, Jessie became ill and a leg amputation was required. She died at Port Fairy in 1978 (death cert. No. 7738). Aged 67. He death was a result of complications from the leg amputation.

Thankfully her daughter had been able to notify some of the family of Jessie's illness and they were able to spend some precious time with her prior to her death. She was laid to rest at the Port Fairy Cemetery.

Donald died from a stroke at the Port Fairy Hospital on the 7th of November 1987. Aged 79. He was buried alongside Jessie.
