Grade 1-2 lessons occur once a week focusing on the e-book content. However, the typical structure fills the first half of the period with English sing-alongs and the second half with textbook/workbook exercises and multimedia input. On this day, I realized that the students had already finished the first half of the text (Units 1-2 and review 1), so I let them choose between moving ahead in the book or having a relaxing day of singing. Watch the video carefully and you will see that the main goals of singing are actually phonics and fluent articulation. All of my actions and words are intentional with the goal of establishing a routine to enable comprehension of various classroom commands and elementary academic discourse such as arithmetic and basic numeracy. This kind of instruction prepares students to accept all-English instruction at later grade levels. In addition, because the students are given agency over the direction and pace of learning activities, they have natural, intrinsic interest and engagement. Point systems and prize awards are unnecessary, as the students are content with agency and praise.
