In 1921 The British Sangamo company was founded as a subsidiary of Sangamo Electric Co of Springfield, Illinois, USA. It started out manufacturing electrical meters and time switches. In 1936 British Sangamo acquired the Weston Electrical Instruments Company of Surbiton, which was the UK subsidiary of The Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation of Newark NJ. The new company was named Sangamo Weston.
Edward Weston was a British-born engineer who emigrated to the USA in 1870 and subsequently founded the Weston Electrical Instrument Company. He was a prolific inventor and held over 300 patents. His name is widely associated with the Weston light meter and, of course, the Weston cell.
