Pop Art Ice Cream Cones
3rd Grade
During this unit students studied the defining features of Pop Art! We took a closer look at the artworks created by master POP artists Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. We learned that they have created pictures of ice cream which inspired us to create our own! Students learned how to create a value scale of color by mixing tempera paint to make the shades and tints of a single color hue. After creating the ice cream scoops and watercolor resist ice cream cone students decorated their ice cream with analogous colored sprinkles and textural toppings.
Organic Warm and Cool Landscapes inspired by Ted Harrison
Students studied landscape composition and the artwork and history of Canadian artist Ted Harrison. Students studied warm and cool color theory, organic shape and how to create depth by overlapping shapes to create a foreground, middle ground and background. After creating landscape drawings in pencil students traced their lines with glue. Once the glue had dried students began to fill in the shapes that they created with artists chalks creating tints and shades by adding black and white chalk to the various warm and cool hues used in the cool mountains/hills and warm sky.
