The enduring idea of how humans have expressed themselves within their own community is a theme that students will explore. Students will learn about master artists and movements by studying the pieces of art exemplifying different artists communities. Students will learn the importance of a community and who they are within theirs. Students will further explore their personal importance within a community and will develop the understanding of how artists throughout history have reflected on their community. Students will begin to understand why it is important for them to be unique and composed of their own individuality. Students will learn why it is important for everyone to come together to form a community with their unique interests and talents. Students will explore these essential concepts and questions of this unit through a collage and mixed media studio assignment. During this unit students will examine color theory by exploring primary, complementary and warm and cool colors. Students will explore how color and design can express emotion. Students will explore the idea of symbols and silhouettes. They will learn how to manipulate complex ideas into simplistic shapes and forms.
