ESBON CHILD

Esbon (sometimes spelled Ezbon) Child, was born on October 5, 1812 at Carthage, Athens, Ohio, the son of Seth Child and Dinah (sometimes spelled Dianah) Frost. His parents were from New England; his father from Woodstock, Connecticut and his mother from Springfield, Massachusetts.

Esbon married Mary, also known as Martha, Haskins, whose parents were from Dutchess County, New York. They were married on April 2, 1835 in Meigs County, Ohio. Esbon and Mary were the parents of five children, all born in Athens County, Ohio. Our ancestor, Caroline Amanda, was the second child, born on March 6, 1839.

Esbon and Mary joined the LDS Church sometime in its infancy, although the dates of their ordinances must not have been recorded properly, which was not uncommon during those early days, so their work has been done by proxy.

Esbon died in Carthage, Athens County, Ohio on April 23, 1850, and is buried in the Old Pioneer Cemetery there. Mary went with the Saints to Utah, where she married James Naylor Jones in 1852 and also John Reynolds. Mary died on June 1, 1878 at Moroni, San Pete County, Utah, and is buried there.
