Students will have the choice of writing the required characters either in pen (biro or black felt tip) or with a brush. These will be judged in separate sections. There will be a prize for the best pen character in each year group, and a prize for the best brush character in each year group.
There will be six sections:

Year 7-9 Pen
Year 10-12 Pen
Primary Brush
Year 7-9 Brush
Year 10-12 Brush
2026 - Characters to be written:
Primary school: うま
Grades 7-9: 和
Grades 10-12: 命
Teachers from around the state are invited to submit entries to the competition according to the following rules:
At most two entries per school may be entered for each section.
Entries can only be made by current students of Japanese.
Students & teachers may find beautifully written examples of these on various websites or in books. These may be copied but not traced.
Each entry must be on A4 paper or 半紙, portrait style. Printer paper is normal; washi is optional.
On the back of the entry must be neatly printed (in pencil) the student’s name, grade, and school. Please ensure that the names are legible!
Not going over the first attempt to make it look better
Teachers must check that the required information is clearly printed on the back of the entry, and are requested to sign as an indication that it is the original work of the student.
Entries MUST be received (not posted) by the due date - and no digital entries are accepted.
Entry is free for schools who have teachers that are JATNET members.
Schools not registered with JATNET will incur a non-member fee of $30.
