Sylvan Lake, Black Hills, SD - taken October 2018
I am originally from Rapid City, SD. I spent my childhood climbing, hiking, spelunking, and camping in the Black Hills, and I still love to be outdoors. My love of the outdoors also extends to gardening which is one of my favorite hobbies. I mostly grow vegetables, fruit, and cut flowers.
I am currently residing in San Mateo, CA with my husband, son and daughter, along with our dog, North. We have now lived in California for over 10 years!
We are striving to instill a love of the outdoors in our children and are often hiking, enjoying the beaches, or playing at the park on the weekends. We also spend a significant amount of time every summer camping and backpacking around California and beyond. In the past 2 years, we've backpacked in the Olympics (Washington) and Yosemite NP (California)
My passion is engineering education. I find delight in preparing effective learning opportunities and materials, inviting and participating in intelligent discussions, and meeting and learning with/from engineering students each and every semester. Ultimately, I find nothing more rewarding than when students acquire knowledge and learn to employ it masterfully. In my current role as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the School of Engineering and a Teaching Professor, my job has three primary responsibilities:

In addition to gardening, I also like to travel and explore new places. Our family plans several trips every year, and we try to spend time at the National Parks.
When I'm not traveling and instead I'm spending time at home, largely in my garden growing vegetables, cut flowers and my mini-orchard. I also like crafty projects - I knit and sew and also enjoy baking. Mostly we explore projects and recipes that catch my eye (or my kids' eyes).
