In robotics, a delta robot is a type of parallel Robot that is equipped with three arms connected to universal joints at the bottom. The salient feature is the use of parallelograms in the wings, maintaining the orientation of the end effectors. It is equally popular as spider robots in the industry circle. You would always find the high speed of delta robots in the packaging, medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Due to its stiffness, it is also used for surgery.
Other applications include high precision assembly operations in a cleanroom for electronic components. Delta robots are used in applications where the Robot is picking products in groups and placing them in a container or an assembly pattern.
The delta robot has a force sensor and uses the sensor for complex assembly applications—also, collision detection sensors which alert the Robot if pressure builds up.
Delta Robots application in Industrial Food Production and Packaging
Beyond the regular pick-and-place assignments, we use delta robots extensively in the food production domain, characterized by high volume strict health and safety parameters. A food producer must meet standards for equipment washdown, and prevent exposure of food product to contaminants like lubricants, fragments of metal or plastic, or dust.
A delta robot is cut out for these type of operation as the motors could be isolated in enclosures, and other models are available up to IP69K ingress protection rating, permitting the delta robot to be blasted by a high-pressure, high-temperature washdown.
Technology and Programming behind Delta Robot operations
The technician experienced with programming industrial robots is technically equipped to handle delta robot programming. The experts have the opinion that delta robots are in simpler to program than serial manipulators, and in some rare cases, they are more complex.
These high speed working robots are programmed to work in synchronization with the conveyor's parts moving along. The conveyor can be equipped with an encoder to pass information to the PLC. A vision system is used to organize efficient picking of these parts gives the correct parts to the robots, controlled by the PLC.
