Theme: Redefining the role of the military in democratization

Conference on democratization and the military is organized by Research Committee 44 (RC44) of the International Political Science Association and will be held at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand on 4-5 July 2017. The conference will provide a forum for discussions on a number of issues related to democratization and the military.

The call for papers is closed and final papers by all participants should be submitted until June 10, 2017 to the RC44 interim secretary, Radomir Compel, Nagasaki University (cmplrad@nagasaki-u.ac.jp). Final program will be determined after the reception of full papers. It is envisaged that the papers will attempt to provide a wide and comparative prism of the different regions of the world (Americas, Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Pacific) as well as the unique circumstances of different countries and specific situations. The papers will be based on theoretical discourse, empirical case studies, comparative analysis between regions or countries or critical narrative and reflection of an ongoing situation. We hope to publish the papers in a special journal issue.

Flights

Most of the international flights to Christchurch go through Auckland, although some international airlines such as Air New Zealand, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Fiji Airways, China Airlines and various Australian airlines fly directly to Christchurch. Flights to Auckland from any part of the world are frequent, although the only challenge is the tyranny of distance for some.
