Gardens come in different shapes and sizes, they fill different roles for different types of people. They vary across the globe, and even those right next to each other in a neighborhood or in community garden plots may be distinct. This week, your assignment is to visit 3 different types of gardens, to observe them and think about them, and to write up a paragraph about each garden. In your write-up, please answer at least these questions: Where was the garden located? What did the garden look like? What types of plants did it seem to have in it? What do you think is the purpose of the garden? What type of person/people might have created this garden and why? Would I make a garden like this? You should also try to take a photograph of each garden, if appropriate (if the gardener is present, you should definitely ask first if that is ok to do). You may also want to ask the gardener (if present) questions about his/her garden. Please make sure you interview at least one gardener.
Gardens you may want to visit include but are not limited to:
1) Gardens in people's yards near campus and/or in your neighborhood
2) Gardens tended by family/friends
3) Community garden plots (there is one right in Manoa walking distance from campus) follow this link to find the community gardens and learn more about them: http://www.honolulu.gov/parks/hbg/crgp.htm and/or call Mr. Nathan Wong, Community Garden Coordinator, at 522-7063.
4) A lo'i (taro patch)
5) Japanese water garden
6) Please complete the campus tour described in the attachment below as one of your gardens
