We are pleased to announce for the first time that we have been invited to the annual Joint Inn of Court program with the Temple Law School Inn of Court and the Villanova law Inn of Court will be held on October 12, 2010 at the Federal Courthouse at 6th and Market Streets.  It should be an exciting and entertaining evening.  We are honored that our speaker will be Senator Arlen Specter, the five-term senator from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Our topic is “Senate Confirmation Proceedings of Supreme Court Nominees:  So What’s the Point?”  Senator Specter will discuss how a Supreme Court nominee’s appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee has evolved over the last 30 years.  What do the Senators learn?  Is it becoming a political soapbox?  Do the nominees ultimately adopt positions as predicted?  Senator Specter has participated in the confirmation hearings for 14 Supreme Court nominees, including every member of the present Supreme Court.

We also plan to give the audience a chance to ask Senator Specter questions about his experience on the Judiciary Committee and recent proposed legislation regarding the role courts play in the United States, including cameras in the courtroom.

Professor Tuan Samahon will present a brief introduction to the program by presenting us with a historical context of the Senate confirmation process.  Professor Samahon teaches constitutional law and federal courts at Villanova Law School.  He testified last year before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution on the Appointments Clause.  His research focuses on the separation of powers.

The cost is  $25 payable at the door.  Please make checks payable to “J. Willard O’Brien American Inn of Court”. Please note that if you RSVP, but can not attend, you will still be responsible for the cost.
