5The 2011 Moffat Cup and Alf Harvey Memorial Trophy Series was held at the Bay of Islands Yacht Club on the weekend of 26-27 February.
165 Waimate North Rd, Kerikeri, Northland
(Michael Cooper’s Buyers Guide to New Zealand Wine 2011
rates their Ake Ake Chambourcin 2009 as New Zealand’s best Chambourcin)
The weather, the scenery and the sailing were excellent. A few boats couldn't make it due to work, health and mechanical issues. But at the last moment, Che Sera appeared from Opua to make the minimum of 10 boats we were seeking.
Maree and Peter Sharp in Idiosyncracy won four of the five races to take the Moffat Cup title. In Legacy Dan Salmon and Max Cumming won one race and overall came second on line to win the QP Trophy. Gary Matthews sailing HiFi with Patrick Williamson came third overall on line - a spectacular result given that Gary, who first started sailing IAs in the 1950s, chose to sail without a spinaker.
On handicap Anthony and Mark Marino sailing the old plank Scandal (said to have been built in 1957 by the Grayson Brothers in Titirangi) won the beautiful Alf Harvey Memorial Trophy, with Gary Matthews and Patrick Williamson (HiFi) and Dave Skyrme and Lindsay Subritsky (Che Sera) second equal on handicap.
Our sincere thanks go to Kim Admore who was voluntary OOD for the regatta, to Tony and Nina Kiff who not only provided the committee boat, but also took and distributed photographs of the event. Thanks also to the Bay of Islands Yacht Club and all their helpers including Michael on Patrol Boat and John Candy and to Peter and Maree who did so much work preparing for a great event. Thanks also to Gary Matthews for his enthusiasm and organisational drive and for making the IA maquettes given to the major place getters. Thanks also to Ansley and John of Ake Ake Wines for their support and to Rita and Paul for polishing all the trophies.
Thanks also to Keith Fraser, Commodore of the Heretaunga Boating Club for his assistance with providing the Moffat Cup for the weekend. Thanks also to John Grace of the WYA.
It was great to see Paul Wright come to visit and also great to see Jim Ellis and Denise sailing Obsession in the face of great odds.

Two motions were passed by the meeting attended by all skippers and many crew:
(a) The 2012 Moffat Cup event: this will be held at Lake Taupo in March 2012; Gary Matthews will attend the 2011 regatta to investigate further. It is hoped to have some other legacy classes compete as well.
(b) Class rules re trapezes: After considerable discussion, it was agreed to retain the existing rules allowing the use of trapezes. While some skippers incidated they would not wish to use trapezes, it was felt that in order to attract more young competitors to the class, trapezes should remain within the class rules.
