Psyche II (Originally IA5, 1938, Christchurch)
Purchased late last year to restore, but plans have changed and will now be relocating for study. Unfortunately, she cannot come.. She is ready to sail but could be tidied up a little in the winter.
Was told she is carvel planked kahikatea on kauri frames. The planks have been edge glued with west systems epoxy resin, (by a previous owner) so she doesnt need to take up when launching.
Mast, Boom, Bowsprit and Spinnaker pole are all Oregan. They could do with a new coat of varnish.
In the down season, the hull could do with a small amount of epoxy filling and a repaint, although is ready to go as is
Comes with main, jib and 2 spinnakers. Main is from IA38, therefore shows a different sail number than origional. All are in used but fair condition. All other components are there.
Mark has a ply IA for sale. Open to a reasonable offer.
I have an Idle Along that is in reasonable condition. It has the following:
2 main sails (one light like a drifter and a heavier one)
1 Spinnaker and pole
1 Head sail.
1 Trapeze harness.
The vessel is on a wooden trolley that in turn is on a hand trailer.
The centre board and rudder are also present.
There are a few tiny areas that need attention but I cannot see why it is not ready to sail.
I would like to sell this vessel and purchase a runabout with a motor. I would consider a swap as well.
Email us (IdleAlongNZ@gmail.com) and we'll forward your details. Please email us if you know any history for this boat.
We received an email today (4 May 2013) from a person in Dunedin who has an incomplete IA restoration that he does not have room for any longer.
He writes "
My father bought it for me as a project, and I've never been able to spend any time on it. It is ply, and was stripped back and a couple of patches repaired with fibreglass. Most fitting have been removed. It needs a reasonable amount of attention before being painted. It's been stored in a shed for 10 years, but this is no longer possible and I currently have nowhere to put it.
It has a set of sails and trailer. The trailer would need considerable attention, and may not be worth recovering."
Let us know if you are interested (IdleAlongNZ@gmail.com) and we'll send you the details.
Bruce Kenyon is looking for a mainsail for his IA. If you can help please email him at Bruce Kenyon <wairoa@gobus.co.nz>
There are a couple of really good IAs for sale at present - not cheap - but they've either won or come second in the IA champs. One is for sale to someone who will sail them actively in IA events. Contact Gary Matthews 0274-816-850 or Keith Salmon 021-240-9414 for details.
One of these boats is Gary Matthews' very own IA24 Hi Fi - beautiful fast IA. Professionally built and maintained in near new condition. Full set of sails. Excellent gear. Road trailer. $5000 to a keen IA sailor who would sail in the major IA events. Well below the price of building a new boat. Gary sailed Hi Fi to second place in the 2011 Moffat Cup with a young crew and no spinaker.
IA - Dunedin - August 2012 - non-traditional rig
Lightweight ply boat built around 1990. Has high aspect ratio rig and '29er' gennaker with prod bolted on to bowsprit, giving skiff performance downwind.
Vendors say: "Thanks for putting boat on your website. The later IA rig is more powerful and easier to handle than the traditional rig. Spinakers include an IA traditional single luff and a double luff 470, both in good condition. I prefer the Gennaker as it is more suited to the stronger winds on Otago harbour and is easier to gybe. I have not raced against a traditionally rigged IA so don't know the performance advantage."

IA 3 Obsession - $2800 - April 2012
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts-sail-boats/small-sailboats/auction-454856654.htm
Idle Along class classic yacht, IA 3 "OBSESSION" brilliantly rebuilt to 'as new' condition over two years by Alan Jones and only used five times since completion in 2008.
Won 'best restored' award at 2011 "Moffat Cup" regatta.
Ply boat, best gear, alloy spars, good sails incl single and double luff spinnakers.
On 'as new' reg and warranted galvanised road trailer.
A tow away, sail away bargain with nothing to do.
We have had an email from someone who used to sail IAs with his Dad many years ago - he is looking for a cheaper IA to teach his kids to sail in. If you can help please email IdleAlongNZ@gmail.com (Nov 2011)
Boats for sale
Some of the following boats may have been sold - check on TradeMe please!
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts-sail-boats/small-sailboats/auction-465502415.htm
Uira has a broken mast - the IA Association can provide information on how to order a new one! Cost about $180.
As at 17 November the bidding was up to $205. One of the bidders sounds like he might be an old IA sailor from Christchurch!
The advert says: "Classic Idle Along plywood sailing dinghy designed by [Alf Harvey], "Uira" has been a notable past performer in the Nelson Lakes Classic Boats regatta.
The Idle Along is an ideal family sailing dinghy; roomy, fast, fun and extremely stable and has 3 integral separate buoyancy compartments.
Unfortunately the aluminium mast broke late in summer 2011 and will need either repair or replacement.
Other than the mast, the boat is in pretty good condition throughout although a few minor scrapes in the varnish would benefit from a touch-up in the not too distant future.
Sails (battened main, furling jib and spinnaker) are all in good shape with no tears or patches.
The boat comes with center-board, rudder, tiller, sheets, trapeze, boom, buoyancy compartment hatches, spare bailer; in short everything ready to go sailing once the mast is repaired or replaced. "

An IA has been put up for auction at a Blenheim auction house - August 2011.
"Classic Idle Along yacht. Built in 1938. Well maintained and sailed in classic races. Comes complete with sails including spinnaker. Frame is Kauri. "
Appears to be called Psyche 5?

We have received the following email from Graham Rowe; it's really sad
Graham won't be able to race with us again this year - but if you are
looking to buy an IA for the Moffat Cup, here is an opportunity.
Regards, Keith
Hi Everyone,
I hope that the festive season was restful and the New Year has
started well.
Unfortunately "Ivy" won't be at the next Moffat Cup - but she is for
sale, if there is anyone known to you that may wish to compete. I
haven't listed her on Trade Me yet but will shortly. Ivy has a lot
more potential to increase her current handicap of 0.91 and has no
apparent vices. She was tuned to comply with Grant Blewetts tuning
guide and that seemed to suit her.
She is in very good nick, has two foresails and an assymetic and a
double luff kite - the latter being a new sail built for Jo Aleh.

Graham Rowe, 021 410 201 or 09 420 2105
