Exploring the Results of your Reading

Now that you have created your reading and added the result of your casting, you can now use this software to explore the I Ching, and how your personal reading(s) relates to it. The software comes with the Legge translation of the Hexagram and Line statements preloaded, as well as the Great Image from the wings. There is also a word by word translation key for the hexagram statements, and you can add as many different translations for individual hexagrams and lines as you wish.

To Read the Text of the Primary Hexagram

  1. Click the PRIMARY TAB in the main hexagram box, if it is not already selected.

  2. Click the READ HEXAGRAM button on the right hand side of the box.

  3. The Hexagram Text pop up form opens.

Below the hexagram title you will see two boxes, the top one containing four tabs for HEXAGRAM TEXT, TRANSLATION KEY, GREAT IMAGE, and SOURCES. When the form first opens you will see the Legge translation of the hexagram text displayed. The TRANSLATION KEY shows each character and pinyin word of the Hexagram text with a basic translation of what it means. The GREAT IMAGE is, again, Legge’s translation of the Daxiang. The SOURCES tab provides information about where the information contained in this software came from.

In the lower box on the form is a list of alternative translations. To add a new translation, click on the button at the bottom of the page below. To view a translation, just click on the link within the list.

There are also a number of other buttons and controls which take you to other hexagrams in the I Ching. You can go directly to the hexagrams of context by clicking one of the three buttons down in the bottom right of the screen. At the top left are two buttons that enable you to step through the sequence of the hexagrams forwards and backwards; or you can just go directly to any other hexagram by selecting it from the drop down list at the top right.

Alongside the diagram of the current hexagram are buttons for each of its lines. Simply click the button to bring up a new form displaying the text for that line. You may add alternative translations by clicking the button at the bottom of the page. To view an alternative translation, just click the link in the list.

NB you can also read the text of the changing line directly from the main Reading’s form. You can do this as follows:

    1. Click the PRIMARY TAB in the main hexagram box, if it is not already selected.

    2. Click the button to the right of the hexagram diagram that represents the changing line.
