Yijing, Word by Word
This is an excellent e-book by Bradford Hatcher downloadable free from his www.hermetica.info website. I used volume 2 of this book - the section referred to as "A Translators Manual" - alongside a number of other translations, and dictionaries when I was writing the translation key for the Zhouyi text in the I Ching Reading's Journal, and I found it to be a really useful resource. He has created a translation matrix with each word and title from the I Ching (including the main wings), being given its own line, and each line includes the Chinese character, its pinyin, and a choice of three different translated words in English. The philosophy behind three different words for each Chinese character being the latter has a broader range of meanings. As such, the three English translated words help to capture these extra dimensions, which one English word alone might not - or at least, not as well. Volume one of the book is also well worth looking at. It consists of a more conventional translation, and an excellent commentary which has, on many occasions, resonated deeply with the situation that I had been enquiring about. Both volumes also come with some advanced background information about using the I Ching. I would certainly recommend anybody to download both volumes.
