Grants and donations

In recent years the club has received a number of grants and donations to support specific club activities and improvements to our facilities. For a small club run entirely by community volunteers, with limited ability to raise funds directly from our members, these awards have been critical to the club’s success.

Without these generous donations the club would not have been able to provide subsidised coaching for our junior membership which has led to a huge increase in local children playing at the club. Our sponsors supporting children playing tennis all emphasise that “Sport is the Solution” to building healthier minds and bodies, teaching teamwork and social skills and improving social behaviour.

The club is fully behind and supportive of these principles.

At the same time, much of that vision can only be accomplished by having safe facilities where players of all ages will feel comfortable and welcome. To that end, the grants awarded to create a new, modern sports facility within the local community of Hurst Green, have been critical to achieving that aim. Without these generous awards the club would not have been able to finance the rebuilding of our courts to provide a secure, safe and vastly improved playing surface to modern standards.

The club and our members therefore recognise and give thanks to the following organisations and individuals who have helped us financially in recent years.

Hurst Green Tennis Club Committee, 23.05.22

Rotary Club of Titsey (Annual Grants)

The local Rotary Club has helped to fund junior tennis activities at the club for several years. A number of local children have been sponsored in this way providing full membership benefits including participating in tennis camps and receiving professional coaching.

The Community Foundation for Surrey (2018 and 2020)

Two separate grants totalling £4,220 have been made by 3 anonymous donors via the Community Foundation to support and encourage junior tennis. This generous “seed money” has resulted in junior players at the club increasing from fewer than 12 to over 60.

Made by Sport - Clubs in Crisis (2021)

£2,021 was awarded to revive and subsidise junior tennis activities post Covid lockdowns. Part of this grant enabled us to sponsor one of our teenage juniors to attend an official LTA Junior Leaders course and to qualify as a Level 1 coach who now works with the club junior coaching programme.

Cllr Cameron McIntosh, Surrey Councillor for Tandridge (2022)

A donation of £2,000 has been made by our local Surrey County Councillor for improvements to club facilities including court safety and upgrades to the site electrical system and floodlights.

Oxted Parish Council (2022)

A hugely generous grant of £20,000 has been awarded by our local Parish Council to part finance rebuilding the tennis courts and replace the old perimeter fencing. This very significant grant, financed via the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) paid by developers, together with other funds raised, has enabled the club to proceed with this major project, providing a valuable asset for the local community.

Tandridge District Council (2022)

A similarly generous matching grant of £20,000 has been awarded by our local District Council to part finance rebuilding the tennis courts and replace the old perimeter fencing. This grant, together with other funds raised, was hugely significant in being the final amount needed to enable the club to reach its target funding to proceed with this major project.

Waitrose (2020 and 2022)

Over £550 has been donated by our local Waitrose store in Oxted to support special events at the club for juniors, such as the very popular Summer Tennis Camp when the grant helps the club to subsidise the coaching cost and importantly (as far as the children are concerned) to provide a plentiful supply of nibbles and drinks.
