SALLY HINSON 1920-1930

SALLY HINSON

with thanks to Maureen from New Zealand, Sally's daughter.

I've heard many of the things she got up to, she may have been a bit of a rascal to say the least.

I am unsure of the date when Sally went into the Homes. Tragically, Sally was found at birth with her deceased mother, who had succumbed to the the influenza pandemic of 1918 (in which 50 million people worldwide died.) Her 5 year old sister, Catherine, was found wandering the streets.

The only name that Sally mentioned a lot was Marjorie Jones (Vi Jones' sister). Vi remembers Sally very well and says that Sally helped her to knit. Do give my love and regards to Vi, how lovely of her to remember about the knitting with matchsticks. Mum taught me how to knit and I taught both my daughters.

One of the sad things she told us about when she was in the homes, was when she was 6 or near about that, she found from one of the older girls that her sister Catherine was also in the homes. It must have come as a very big shock, as she had been there from a babe in arms, and her sister was about 5.

Mum loved it in my coastal area of New Zealand, she was a great swimmer, and she came all the way from England, both times on her own to see us.

After she left the home, she to went into service, it was that or nursing, then in 1939 she married my dad William Frederick Wilkinson, he was from Hoxton.
