MR and MRS OLDHAM, SUPERINTENDENT and MATRON

Thank you very much to Gerald

The retirement of Mr and Mrs Oldham, 1949

This photo was taken in 1949 on the occasion of the retirement of Mr and Mrs Oldham, the superintendent and matron whom I expect were in charge during your mother's (Vi Jones) time at Hornchurch.

My wife and I are the two children sitting on the ground on the left side of the group.

My future mother-in-law is sitting behind us with my brother-in-law sitting on her lap.

At that time my wifes Father was in the army and on his way to Hong Kong.

My Father, William, had organised a collection for Mr and Mrs Oldham and during the evening they were presented with a clock by him on behalf of the "old boys and girls".

There are a number of our relatives in the photo and I wonder if by any chance your Mother is in the group.

The "old boys and girls" day was always the first Saturday after Whitsun and an open house for all to just turn up for the day.
