My grandfather Herbert Charles AYLWARD (b1896) and his brother David AYLWARD (b1895) are showing on your website as being there on the 1901 Census which fits with the story I have been told.
I have recently had come into my possession two items.
The first is a photo showing two boys smartly dressed. I have a strong feeling that this is Herbert and David as they are close in age. Their outfits look rather splendid for orphans. Does this look like Homes attire? The photo would probably been taken before 1911 when the boys show on that census as being back with their mother in Bethnal Green.
The second item is a copy of Herbert's school leaving reference. I guess this would have been written abt 1908/9 when he was 13/14?
