WP - Out of the Cave

Writing Prompt – Out of the Cave

Part 1 - Chained

Think back in time, before you had read “Allegory of the Cave;” go back down “the steep and rugged ascent” a bit and try to remember what you thought. Recall your response to ‘Learning and Resistances” (The writing prompt that began this unit). Try to remember what you thought and felt the first time you read Plato’s piece.

Part 2 – Repetition

Listen to “Allegory of the Cave” and read along.

Part 3 – Reflection

Now choose one of the writing prompt options below.

1. Compare and contrast the first time you read “Allegory of the Cave” and the last time you read it to Plato’s allegory itself? Did your experience resemble the journey Plato describes? If so, describe how? If not, how did it differ? Be elaborate and use all of your time.

2. Compare and contrast any learning experience you have had to “Allegory of the Cave.”

3. Discuss a scientific discovery and its ensuing denialism (rejection) wherein Plato’s allegory applies (e.g., Galileo’s discovery and subsequent experience).

Part 4 – Application

Now predict three ways that you can use what you’ve learned from our study of “Allegory of the Cave” in the future and list them. Consider the big ideas, the essential questions, and our discussions.
