WP: Taken for Granted

Writing prompts help build the ability to respond to questions, and they help writers get their ideas down. Over the course of time, they build writing fluency and proficiency as well.

Please give serious consideration to the prompt, doing so will highlight connections in the texts we read. Please use all of the time provided -- keep writing even when you think you're out of ideas. Remember, writing is a thinking process; the more you write, the more you think! Although I do not assess daily writing responses for conventions, use them to practice your skills – try to write in complete sentences (avoid fragments, run-ons, and comma-splices) and develop other good habits (e.g., capitalization, punctuation). If you want to challenge yourself, compose compound and complex sentences in your writing prompt.

Read the prompt below and compose your thoughts. Please use all of your time.

Reuven ruminates about his eyes, “I had always taken them for granted, the way I took for granted all the rest of my body and also my mind” (Potok 51-52). What do you “take for granted”? Why do you think we must face the possible loss of something before we realize how important it is to us and how fortunate we are? How can we elevate our awareness of our own good fortunes and abilities and not take them for granted?
