At the beginning of his second year at Jacksonville State, Dr. Hedrick started serving as the "Headmaster of Soul" (handle provided by Mike Stedham), that has run every week since that time, with the exception of one week off during Christmas break when Dr. Hedrick travels to California, and any academic conferences he attends. The original justification for the show was to "fill a gap" in the programming at WLJS 91.9 fm that, at that time, offered no soul, hip hop, or rhythm & blues specialty shows. The show airs on Sundays, 4-7pm CST. Since September 2007, every attempt is made to provide an entertaining, yet educational experience for a target audience of primary older listeners in the city of Jacksonville and surrounding communities.
Dr. Hedrick takes an old school approach to the show, playing only CDs that he purchased and are part of his personal music collection. The radio station has little to no soul music in their own collection, although it does have country, jazz, and a collection of classic rock music that is incomplete in that many CDs are missing/lost/damaged. He uses Adobe Audition and Audicity to edit out lyrics that are FCC-clean, and has stored an electronic version of his CD collection in iTunes to catalog it. He also purchased reference material, such as BIllboard TOP 40 R&B and Hip-Hop Hits, and follows artists as well as he can through the Internet.
His show includes soul artist birthday tributes and memorials, while providing background information about songs, artists, groups, and influences from music that grew to dominate the Top 40 charts in late 1960s and 1970s.
