Daryl Hart, son of Mr Chas, W. Hart, of Marshfield, died at the navy hospital in New York City on Jan 31st, after a week's heroic fight against the Grim Reaper. His death was caused by pneumonia. At the first indication of serious illness his father was summoned and was at this son's bedside when the final summons came.
The remains of the young man, clad in his naval uniform of blue, were brought to Marshfield, where funeral service were held at the Presbyterian church. The guards encorted the body to the church and returned to the depot, where it was put on board the train to be brought here for burial.
Daryl, son of Charles and Dora Hart, was born in Humbird, Oct 26, 1901. He lived with his parents here, at Mankota, Minn., and at Marshfield, where his mother died in 1909. A year ago, he enlisted in the navy as a bugler, was trained at the Great Lakes station, and had been assigned to a ship for his first ocean voyage when stricken. He is survived by his father and one brother, Horace.
The flag covered the casket was borne to the grave by six ex-navy young men of the village, Clarence Fristad, Jesse Tubbs, Henry Sparkes, Manley Stuve. the remains arrived here Wednesday at noon, and were taken to the home of the grandparents of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. N. Hart, and from there to the Houghtonburg cemetery, where the burial was made beside his mother. Rev. J.W. Kendall officiated at the burial service.
Relatives from away attending the funeral were Mrs Anna Perry of Chicago, Miss Ivis Hart, of Shell Lake, Mrs. Braman, of Rochester.
