CHAPTER MEETING, june 12, 7:30 PM, MEMBERS’ NIGHT

I. Hiking the John Muir Trail

Presented by Kim Goppert and Al Bushnell

The John Muir Trail, named after the famous naturalist, is considered one of the premier hiking trails in the United States. The trail starts in one of America's greatest natural treasures, Yosemite National Park, and continues 215 miles in the High Sierra backcountry through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King's Canyon National Park, and finishes at the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in continental United States at 14,496 ft. The total elevation gain for the entire trail is a formidable 47,000 ft.The JMT was on Kim Goppert and Al Bushnell's bucket list, and their 2017 hike from Tuolumne Meadows to Whitney Portal exceeded their expectations. In addition to hearing about the trip, you'll learn about the trip planning logistics, including permit application(s), transportation issues, itinerary considerations, meal planning, resupply options, and available JMT resources. We'll also tell you about our 'adopted' trail family and how they made our trip even more special. Plus, you'll see plenty of photos that are sure to whet your appetite for this awesome adventure.

II. The Yellowstone Caldera

Presented by Jackson “Jet” Thomas

June’s program by Jackson “Jet” Thomas will explore some of the wildlife found in this magnificent ecosystem in addition to images of certain geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, mudpots and steam vents. This 30-minute slideshow will explain the thermal features for which this national park is famous and will lead you on a hike of one of the most popular mountains, plus two of the trails along the Yellowstone River for views of the Upper and Lower Falls. You’ll quickly realize why Yellowstone is probably the most photographed national park!

June 12 - LOOKING AHEAD TO September -- PART 1

CHAPTER MEETING, September 11, 7:30 PM

Part I. The Welsh 3000s

Presented by Chris Lehfeldt

Looking for a week’s activity in Europe to include hiking and climbing mountains, I was surprised to learn there are 15 mountains in Wales over 3000’ high. For this 46er, I thought “oh good, I think I could do those in a week.” Little did I know. So different from the Adirondacks, indeed. Shared will be my impressions, photographs, facts, and recollections from my June 2018 trip to Snowdonia National Park.

June 12 - LOOKING AHEAD TO September -- PART 2

Part 2. Norway and Finland

Presented by Ken Harbison

Visit Norway from Oslo to the Arctic coast via a vintage railroad and a coastal cruise with nine stops. The mythology, Viking artifacts, and World War II history will be covered. Interactions with indigenous Sami reindeer farmers was a highlight of travels in Finland.
