June 12 - Chapter Meeting - Program 7:30 PART I

CHAPTER MEETING, june 12, 7:30 PM, MEMBERS’ NIGHT

I. Hiking the John Muir Trail

Presented by Kim Goppert and Al Bushnell

The John Muir Trail, named after the famous naturalist, is considered one of the premier hiking trails in the United States. The trail starts in one of America's greatest natural treasures, Yosemite National Park, and continues 215 miles in the High Sierra backcountry through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King's Canyon National Park, and finishes at the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in continental United States at 14,496 ft. The total elevation gain for the entire trail is a formidable 47,000 ft.The JMT was on Kim Goppert and Al Bushnell's bucket list, and their 2017 hike from Tuolumne Meadows to Whitney Portal exceeded their expectations. In addition to hearing about the trip, you'll learn about the trip planning logistics, including permit application(s), transportation issues, itinerary considerations, meal planning, resupply options, and available JMT resources. We'll also tell you about our 'adopted' trail family and how they made our trip even more special. Plus, you'll see plenty of photos that are sure to whet your appetite for this awesome adventure.
