Focus Groups and Assessments
Focus Groups
Focus groups are groups where a number of people with similar challenges come together to find solutions guided by one or two counsellors. An example would be an Anger Management Focus Group. I rarely do focus groups these days because most individuals needing help do not want to wait until at least five individuals are part of the program. However, the Cascadia Counselling Clinic offers anger management courses regularly.
Participating in a Focus group offers some advantages. Although there is not the same intimacy as in one-to-one interactions, when participating in a group you may learn from the challenges faced by others in the group and how they try to handle these challenges. Group sessions are also less expensive than individual counselling. Focus groups have usually five participants, and each group meeting lasts for two hours. These groups meet for four sessions at weekly intervals.
Topics handled in the Focus Group format include:
VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Anger Management
Partner Violence
MENTAL HEALTH
Anxiety
Depression
Bi-polar Disorder
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Stress Management
SKILL BUILDING
Problem Solving
Communication
Conflict Resolution
