Judges: Joe Luisi & Allen Welch 19 starters. Cast off 7:45 am

1st brace JAK, handler Jesse Chapman

DUNCAN, handler John Rabidou

Both dogs ran at medium range. Duncan pointed along the wet field right hedgerow. Jak was seen as backing. Jak’s handler saw something that displeased him and opted to pick him up. Duncan’s manners were good, especially when a bird flew over his head. This hedgerow would now be known as “first bird hedgerow”. He had a non-productive in the clump before the long Rt 58 edge and a good find on the right side of the Rt 58 corn stubble field. Time was called.

2nd brace DUSTY, handler Jesse Chapman

SCOUT, handler Susan DeSilver

Both dogs broke away with good range. On long wet field (where birds were found at first brace), Dusty hit point with Scout backing. Jesse could not find birds and sent Dusty to relocate. Backing dog, Scout, was sent forward. After a second relocation and no birds found, Dusty was taken on. After going through the woods/river bottom and getting into the open field, Scout hunted the middle line, while Dusty took the top side. At 46 mins Sue stopped to remove burrs from her dog and water. Dusty was on the right side heading toward Rt 58 and had a very stylish point, all in order. Dusty continued on right side of corn stubble field. He had not been seen for several minutes when handler called “point” at 55 mins. Scout was working the left side of corn stubble field when she crossed all the way over and went into the right edge where Dusty standing on point. Scout failed to back and was leashed. Bird was produced for Dusty who never lost composure. As time was called Dusty was aggressively running the right edge at the corn of Rt 58.

3rd brace ROY handler Jim D’Amico

ZZ, handler Trena Cardwell

Roy broke away on the left side. He disappeared in the thick cover and showed to the front. ZZ was forward at moderate range. Roy took the far right field of the “first bird hedgerow” forward. ZZ was running the right edge and pointed at the corner. This beautiful point rewarded him with a nice covey of 8-10 birds being flushed. At the river/woods path Roy was spotted pointed with ZZ backing. Unfortunately, no birds were produced. Roy was not seen again until we got through the woods and pond/boat area. ZZ was running forward on the top side when the Judge spotted Roy at the end of the short caller finger on point standing high and tall. Birds flushed, all in order.

Trena decided ZZ was not making money and elected to pick up. Roy was on the right heading for the long field toward Rt 58 when handler Jim saw him standing. He was pointed in the woods near water tub area. Birds were flushed with Roy’s manners perfect. When he entered the long corn stubble field he hunted the field with wide sweeping casts. He grabbed the right edge the second half of the field and ended his hour going away and last seen at the right corner of Rt 58. His stamina never wavered during his hour.

Lunch break

We began the afternoon running at 1 pm.

4th brace STRIDER, handler Pat Sanborn

FRASER, handler John Rabidou

Fraser snapped into a pretty high tailed point on the “first bird hedgerow”. All in order. When released he went a few yards and hit another point. This point proved barren after relocation and no birds were found. Strider had gone on ahead. He went missing at 15 mins. And was last seen heading left after “first bird hedgerow” water tub and not returned for judgment. Fraser was running at moderate range. He disappeared at the boat pond and finally came around on the other side. John called point by the water tub before Rt 58 corn field. Fraser was moving and working the area thoroughly, so no flushing attempt was made. This was time.

5th brace ROWDY, handler DeSilver

ROCKY, handler D’Amico

Both dogs broke away with speed and purpose. Rowdy was running the “first bird hedgerow”. Rocky with a driving gait was on the left side of the field. He came over to the right edge as Rowdy was establishing point. Rocky slowed to back but didn’t get it done. He was leashed. Rowdy handled the birds well. He looked like he had 100 burrs cover his whole body that Sue stopped to pull out. Handler and scout finally helped him out. He continued on, but not with his prior performance, so handler elected to pick him up.

6th brace MINNIE, handler Chapman

JILL, handler Cardwell

3:25pm - Minnie broke right, with Jill breaking to the left. Both exhibiting speed and drive. Both taking the “first bird hedgerow” Jill established point near the end of the line with Minnie also stopping to point. Minnie moved a step forward. Both handlers fired. Minnie was found pointing in a “thicket” at the pond/boat area. Jesse crawled thru the clump, but no bird was found. He elected to just “get-outa-there!”.

Jill took the top left side of the long field and Minnie on the bottom, right. Heading toward Rt 58 field Jill is on the right side of the long field, Minnie hunting the left side. Both dogs are digging in. At the black water tub area point is called for Jill who is tucked into the edge pointing staunchly. Jill was watered and cast off on left side of corn stubble field. She was running her edges beautifully with good range. Minnie pointed on the right side with all in order. Time was called with dogs finishing their hour at the right corner of Rt 58.

Thursday morning – National Championship continues.

7th brace POLLY, handler Sandy Clock

FLYER, handler – Roy Smith

Flyer went missing on the left side. Polly pointed in the field of the “first bird hedgerow”, which resulted in a non-productive. She then had a good find farther up the hedgerow. At 20 mins Flyer was found and took the “first bird hedgerow”. He scented birds and would not leave or go forward. Handler elected to pick up. Polly hunted at moderate range. She worked the clump by the black water tub & Rt 58 and pointed with bird flushed. Her hour ended there.

8th brace BART, handler Chapman

BUCK, handler Cardwell

9am. Both dogs broke away on the left with powerful strides. Buck was on left side of wet field, while Bard ran the “first bird hedgerow”. Disappeared. He was found staunchly standing. (Good eye, Pat J). Buck never hit the “first bird hedgerow”. At 15, as we rode thru the cut in the next field, Bart was seen standing very tight. Birds weren’t found, so Bart was relocated. Worked closer to hedgerow and hit another classy point. Birds flushed and Bart remained staunch. Beautiful piece of bird work. Bart caught the front before handler realized it. Buck was running the top high side then joined Bart at the “bird caller finger”.

Bart was once again standing with Buck backing. Both exhibiting wonderful style. Nice covey flushed. Buck stylishly pointed in the clump in the field near the finger caller. Bird flushed after a long attempt. Buck never lost composure. Both dogs watered at Rt 58 field and cast to the right side. Bart lost some of his punch, while Buck was still running strong. Both dogs were seen on point on opposite sides of a pine. Both exhibiting excellent style. A true divided find, as neither dog could see the other. Handlers worked to flush the running bird. Judge told them to fire and continue. At time both dogs were rounding the bottom of Rt 58 field.

9th brace 007, handler Chapman

KERNAL, handler Greg Dixon

10:24. Both dogs broke away strong, making wide casts. Greg sent Kernal to the left of the wet/”first bird hedgerow”. 007 also missed the bird hedgerow. Both were far to the front crossing at the water tub. Point was called on the stone road by silo edge. 007 was backing. Greg relocated Kernal and Jesse took 007 on. Kernal pointed and a covey was flushed. Kernal was cast forward and pointed again at the far edge of the next field. 007 backing again. This proved to be a non-productive, after an extensive relocation. A covey had been flushed for Bart in this area the brace before. Kernal’s 3rd point was at the caller finger at 39 mins. 007 was pointing in the clump adjacent to the caller. No birds were produced for 007 and he was leashed. Kernal had a fourth find at the Rt 58 water tub area. He made a forward jump after the flush. His style was impeccable on all his finds, but his range shortened considerably from his powerful breakaway. He pointed on the right side of the corn stubble field, only to have his 2nd non-pro.

10th brace AMELIA, handler Roy Smith

“bye”

11:50 am cast. Amelia made some very nice moves. She went through the cut and took the green field at the far turning area of the course. She was working the “bird calling finger” when a bird lifted and she gave a slight chase. Thought better of it and returned to the finger and pointed. Her hour and the stake were finished.

The Gordon Setter Club of America’s Annual National Amateur Championship

November 12 & 13 2010

Cloverdale Farm Sutherlin VA.

By Mary Durham Allen

The sixteenth Gordon Setter Club of America’s National Amateur Championship started Friday morning November 12, 2001 under sunny skies at Cloverdale Farm, Sutherlin, VA. With nineteen entries under the judgment of Kevin & Jean Culver long time breeders, field trial participants with Irish Setters, and field trial judges, I, Mary Allen, had the pleasure of serving as Judges’ Marshal and Scribe. The course is groomed for field trials with an hour course that offers varied terrain as well as many areas that hold birds. Eleven bird callers were used to ensure all dogs had the opportunity to have bird contact. The teamwork of the field operations team – Stakes Managers, Dano Morf, Dan Voss, Jimmy D’Amico, along with the assistance of Professional gundog trainers, Trena Cardwell and Jesse Chapman - was outstanding and provided poetry in motion for all. This class event was run under the leadership of Bill & Jan Holloway.
