National Championships Scribe’s Report for 2004

The third week of October saw the clan of Gordon Setters begin gathering from hither and yon at fall draped Ionia, Michigan for the GSCA National Championships and companion stakes field trial. Black and Tans came from California to Connecticut, from Washington to Georgia, from Minnesota to Texas and points in between to showcase their talents afield against a backdrop of grounds colored with bright reds, fluorescent pinks, brilliant yellows, vibrant oranges, and deep browns intermixed with various shades of green. There just can’t be a better way to spend 5 days. Sitting atop a mighty steed out in all of nature’s glory, watching this breed run, find, then produce upland game birds for the gun according to rules established by the AKC, socializing with friends from around the country, and being expertly taken care of by Nodrog’s tremendous hospitality is awesome. If anyone went away unhappy, it wasn’t because they weren’t well fed!!! They also can’t say that they didn’t see some very impressive dog work!!!

The grounds at Ionia are basically flat with an occasional rolling hill or dip into a valley. Ionia features a series of fields or meadows rimmed by stands of hardwood forest and edge lines and stand-alone objectives. The grounds were in premier condition to showcase dogs. The course begins with a slight grade, facing west at the cast-off to a level plain that features a big meadow to both right and left. It then crosses through a second tree line into an inverted L shaped meadow that has a couple of ponds to head south. Crossing out of that, one enters another meadow bordered by forest on the left, and tree lines at the beginning and on the right. The course angles around this field to enter into what is known as Hires field, now heading west. The course arcs north past a couple of stand-alone objectives, and then exits Hires field with another tree line. The next field is bordered on the right by tree lines and objectives, and on the left by the old trial headquarters, which is now used for horse trailer parking and camping. Crossing out of this field, one enters a field boxed on all sides by tree lines and hedgerows. The next field features straight tree lines to the right, and a zigzag pattern on the left with a stand-alone tree as the course swings around to head east. Crossing through the line on the right, the course then enters another large field, and then arcs to the left going north again. Two subsequent small pocket fields features tree lines off to the left, and forest on the right before beginning a drop into what became known as “heavenly valley”-so named because of the awesome panoramic view from the top of the hill. Crossing the “boy scout” bridge, one enters another large field rimmed by hardwood forest. Crossing through a cut, the course enters yet another field, and then swings to the east. Several hedgerows and tree lines followed on subsequent fields or meadows. An upside down L shaped field turned the course south. The course crossed through what became known as the bottoms because of the heavy cover, and across a bridge and then entered the final field back to the cast off area. In truth, this was an hour long course, so most dogs were picked up with time expired before getting to the bottoms which meant a 10 minute ride back to the cast-off area.

1A Doubledee Falcon’s Dawn (Dawn), O-Gwynne McDevitt, H-Walter Cruz

1B DC/AFC Carolina’s All Hat, No Cattle (Stetson) O-Bill & Jan Holloway, H-Jean Webb

Wednesday morning started off with a cool breeze and overcast skies. Both dogs cast of nicely. Dawn was picked up in Hire’s Field for pushing a bird. Stetson was found at 17 minutes exiting Hires with a strong point and intensity, and then again at 20 minutes in the horse camp field. Stetson had yet another find at 23 minutes before the drop into Heavenly Valley. Continuing to expertly run his lines and edges, Stetson had a find in Heavenly Valley, successfully handled at 35 minutes, and then a find at 41 minutes. Stetson was cast off into the bottoms, and was unable to be produced when time was up. Judges gave the handler ample time, but Stetson was timed out. This scenario kind of set a tone for all subsequent braces of dogs as handlers then all managed their time so that they wouldn’t hit those bottoms. It was too bad for Stetson as a truly High-Class Bird-Dog performance went by the wayside. Ahhh, the agonies of being first!!!

2A Hacasak Spellbound Gone with The Win (Rhett) O-Marianne Goodwin & Carolyn Gold, H-Jim Basham

2B FC/AFC Blackwatch Urban Renegade of Tomar (Watch) O-Anne Boyd & Dave Garrett, H-Trena Cardwell

Birds were plentiful. Rhett and Watch both made big initial moves. Watch had a find at 11 minutes where at least 2 birds were produced. Watch then had a find at 17 minutes exiting Hire’s Field into the horse camp. Rhett, having been reined in then had a find at 23 minutes successfully accomplished. Watch followed with a find at 24 ½ minutes. Rhett was seen standing at 26 ½ minutes, but took a non-productive. This played out again for Rhett at 28 ½ minutes. At 31 ½ minutes, Watch had a find with Rhett honoring. Watch then followed that with another find at 39 ½ minutes, and then with yet another find at 44 minutes with Rhett again backing.

3A FC/AFC Doubledee Sundancer (Sunny) O-Gwynne McDevitt, H- Walter Cruz

3B FC/AFC Locust Hill Chocolate Chip (Chip) O/H John Ward

Sunny had a find at 8 minutes into the course with a high head, high tail just slightly ticking. Chip had his own find at 9 ½ at the entrance to Hire’s Field, also with nice style and intensity. Sunny then had a find at 13 ½ minutes with Chip doing a nice back. Chip then was seen standing at 24 minutes and a bird was produced. Moving on, Chip had another find at 26 ½ minutes, again successfully accomplished. Sunny was seen standing at 28 ½ minutes, but took a non-productive. Chip finished this brace with a nice find at 44 minutes. It should be noted that Chip handled kindly the entire course and worked for the gun in a mature, determined manner.

4A Wyld Heather Bright Star JH (LB) O-Matt & Wendy Czarnecki, H-Trena Cardwell

4B Springset Wind Warrior (Deuce) O-Greg & Michelle Johnson, H-Matt Eder

This brace started off badly as Trena’s companion John was thrown from his horse and hit his head on a rock. Trena was not immediately informed of this so she continued to run her charge. After a nice breakaway for both dogs, Deuce was found standing at the entrance to Hire’s Field at 9 ½ minutes. The bird was handled nicely. LB had several nice finds. It was kind of painful to watch her handler have to remount after these, as Trena was also experiencing a very sore back. Unfortunately, LB had to be picked up shortly after the field past the horse-camp. At 16 minutes, Deuce was again found, and birds handled nicely. Deuce followed that up with finds at 23, 28 ½ and at 36 minutes. On each of the latter three finds, he ticked just ever so slightly, indicating moving birds. The handler properly waited for the dog to stiffen into a rigid point before dismounting and going into work the birds. All three were nicely produced. John was taken to the hospital for a check-up. He spent a few woozy days, but is going to be OK.

Lunch was taken after the 4th brace was completed. The afternoon found bird-work a little harder to come by as temperature, while comfortable for humans wasn’t ideal for dogs.

5A Doubledee Danni (Danni) O-Gwynne McDevitt, H-Walter Cruz

5B Ch Sun-Yak Spellbound Heaven Scent (E.T.) O-Carolyn Gold, H-Jim Basham

After the breakaway, Danni was seen standing at 11 minutes. After a re-location, he took a non-productive. He was then recast, and then locked up further down that same line and successfully produced a bird. ET had a find and successfully produced a bird at 18 ½ minutes. Both dogs were given credit for a divided find at 30 minutes. ET then had a find with Danni failing to honor at 37 minutes. Danni was picked up.

6A DC Tartana Cutty Sark (Cutter) O-Marianne Goodwin/Susan DeSilver/Holly Wachuta, H-Susan DeSilver

6B Teutoburger Wald Sugar Magnolia (Maggie) O-Bruce & Christine Ulness, H-Cindy Findley

Maggie was scheduled to be handled by Trena Cardwell. Due to John’s accident, Maggie was run by Cindy Findley. Unfortunately, Maggie missed her normal handler and wouldn’t handle for Cindy. She was picked up. Cutter had a find at 21 ½ minutes and the bird was successfully flushed. He had another find at 33 minutes buried deep in cover. Again, the bird was handled nicely. Cutter’s performance was strong, and mature in nature with good intensity.

7A NAFC/FC/AFC Falcons Jess (Jessie) O-Jim D’Amico & Pat Sanborn, H- Jim D’Amico

7B Doubledee Drumbeat (Drumbeat) O-Gwynne McDevitt, H-Walter Cruz

Drummer had a find, successfully accomplished at 17 ½ minutes. At 21 ½ minutes Drummer had another find with Jessie backing. Jessie went on to have her own bird at 23 ½ minutes. Drummer was then seen standing at 24 minutes, was relocated, and a bird successfully produced. Jessie went on to have additional nice finds at 29 and 39 minutes and demonstrating why she is a past National Amateur Champion..

8A Taimen Talo Thunderbolt JH (Boomer) O-Sandra & Charley Clock, H-Jim Basham

8B FC Sierra Nevada Hot Tip (Tip) O-Terry Scott, H-Trena Cardwell

Boomer had a nice find at 7 ½ minutes. Boomer then had a find entering Hire’s field. As the handler moved into flush, several birds popped and Boomer went with the birds and was picked up. Trena was back from checking on John to run Tip. Tip had a nice find at 12 ½ minutes. At 19 minutes, Tip was seen standing. After a relocation, a bird was successfully produced. Tip went on to have additional nice finds at 24 ½, 27, 30, and finished strong with a nice find in Heavenly Valley.

9A Doubledee Falcons Whata Deal (Dealer) O-Gwynne McDevitt, H-Walter Cruz

9B Tarbaby’s Setanta T’Rex (Rex) O-Frank Watters, H- Jean Webb

Rex had a find at 5 minutes before the ponds. At 8 ½ minutes, Rex successfully handled a stop to flush. Dealer had a find at 10 minutes and a bird was produced. Rex was then seen standing at 12 minutes, but a bird couldn’t be produced and a non-productive was taken. Rex then had successful finds at 23 ½, 25 ½ and at 27 minutes. At 29 ½ Dealer took a non-productive. Rex finished the day with a successful find at 37 minutes.

10A Perpetual Motion Bright Star JH (Driver) O-Matt & Wendy Czarnecki, H-Trena Cardwell

10B FC Prairie Star High Noon (Cooper) O-Dano & Marianne Morf, H-Jim Basham

Thursday morning opened up with just enough sunshine to cause a fog to envelop the grounds. The dogs were cast off. Cooper had a successful find at 4 ½ minutes, and then again at 11 minutes before entering Hire’s Field. Driver failed to back and was picked up. At 15 minutes, the fog was thick enough that the AKC Rep suggested to the judges to hold up the brace until the fog lifted. About a 15-20 minute delay ensued as the sun came up and melted the fog away. From then on, it was back to being overcast. Cooper was then recast and had a find at 17 minutes, and again at 27 minutes. Cooper then followed that up with additional successful finds at 32 and at 35 dropping into Heavenly Valley. Cooper’s performance was mature and intense, demonstrated intelligence, with style, and was easily handled.

11A Milomix Checkers (Chec) O/H John Ward

11B Doubledee Westwind Douglas (Douglas) O-Gwynne McDevitt, H-Walter Cruz

Douglas had his first find at 15 ½ minutes in the Horse camp field. Another find was had by Douglas at 18 ½ minutes but it took a while before he solidified into the scent cone of the bird. Once done, a bird was successfully produced. Both Chec and Douglas had separate finds at 24 minutes and both produced birds. Chec had a nice find at 31 minutes at the drop into Heavenly Valley. At 37 minutes, Douglas successfully handled a stop to flush. At 40 minutes, Douglas had yet another find, which Chec failed to honor and was ordered up.

12A NFC/FC/AFC McGovern’s Rave Review (Ray) O-Cindy McGovern, H-Trena Cardwell

12B FC/AFC Par’s Falcon On The Prowl (Tiger) O-Gerald & Sandra Churton, H-Roy Smith

Ray cast off and had a bird on the edge at 4 minutes 25 seconds. At 13 minutes, Tiger has a nice find with solid intensity and style in Hire’s Field. Tiger followed that with another bird producing find at 16 ½ minutes. Where the course turns east, Tiger had another find at 20 minutes with Ray doing a nice stylish honor from about 100 feet. Ray had a find at 27 minutes and produced a bird. At the same time, Tiger took a non-productive on another line. Both dogs successfully produced birds at 30 minutes on separate finds. At 40 minutes, Tiger had a find, which Ray failed to honor and was picked up. Up until that time, it was clear why Ray has been a past NFC as he was putting down a solid and mature performance that was going in the pursuit of game.

13A FC/AFC Sandy Creek Skedaddle (Rebel) O- Ken Kohles, H- Jim Heckert

13B FC Prairie Star First Edition (Marge) O-Dano & Marianne Morf, H-Jim Basham

Rebel, after about the 3 minute mark disappeared and wasn’t seen again for several hours. Fortunately, he was found. Marge had a find on the exit line of Hire’s field at 15 minutes with nice style and intensity. Marge also had another find at 31 minutes at the entrance to Heavenly Valley.

14A Sagemoor’s Western Skies (Harley) O-Leslie Green & Phyllis Langly, H-Trena Cardwell

14B FC The Carolina Connection (Charley) O-Bill & Jan Holloway, H-Bill Holloway

Harley had a find in the second field off the cast off at 3 ½ minutes. Charley was then found at 7 ½ minutes on the line behind the ponds. As the handler went in to flush, 25-30 birds exploded from all sides of the dog like a nuclear bomb going off, but he held. Harley bumped and chased at the entrance to Hire’s Field and was ordered up. Charley, overexcited from his previous find was seen chasing a bird at the exit to Hire’s Field at the 15 minute mark and was picked up.

15A Falcons Wingspan (Solo) O- Pat Sanborn, H-Jim Basham

15B Sierra Nevada Hot Wheels (Jack) O-Anne Boyd, H-Trena Cardwell

After the cast off, Solo was seen standing at the entrance to Hire’s Field at 11 minutes, and was successfully relocated to produce a bird. Meanwhile, Jack was having a stop to flush also at 11 minutes in the middle of Hire’s field. Solo then had a find at 26 minutes in the big field that turns the course east with the bird being in the path. Solo followed that find up with a good find at 43 minutes.

16A Sierra Nevada Hot Pursuit (Trouble) O-Stu & Colleen Farnham, H-Trena Cardwell

16B FC Tomar’s Victory Renegade CD SH (Nike) O-Janet Grunbok & Chris Bury, H- Janet Grunbok

Trouble had a find on the line to Hire’s Field, was relocated, but a bird wasn’t able to be produced. Meanwhile, Nike had a stop to flush behind the big objective in Hire’s Field also at 15 minutes. At 20 minutes, Nike had a small covey find successfully handled. At 22 ½ minutes, Trouble had a nice find. At 30 ½ minutes, Nike was seen standing, was relocated, but was unable to produce a bird. At 36 minutes, Nike had another nice find in the field dropping into Heavenly Valley. That brought to a close the Open National Championships.

Placements were thus: 1st- Cooper, 2nd -Chip, 3rd-Nike, 4th-Cutter, with an award of merit to Tip.

In discussing with the judges after all things were said and done, their comments about the dogs they chose were these. What the judges were looking for was application, application, application, which translates to an all consuming hunger and dedication to go in the pursuit of birds, intelligence in seeking objectives and likely cover, and a willingness to work for the gun, kindly handled. Comments for Cooper were that his was a total High-Class Bird-Dog performance. He showed a great and accurate nose by standing well off his birds. He handled kindly in a mature manner and showed extreme dedication. Comments for Chip very similar to Coopers. They especially liked the handler’s calm demeanor and easy handle on the dog. Little separated any of the placing dogs. . For Nike, it was a dedication to purpose. Cutter’s comments were about his easy handle and his thoroughness. Tip was given very high marks by the judges for her performance. What kept her out of the placements was a lower tail. Informed that she is 10 years old, and that the lower tail is due to an injury from a car accident, they commented that they could see how she could have placed much higher, perhaps even in 1st in any given year. The judges were extremely impressed with the overall quality of the field. All mentioned placing dogs put down mature High-Class Bird-Dog performances. The one area where the judges most felt things could be improved is in getting the gallery to keep quiet about what dogs are or aren’t doing. Judges have personal preferences of what they consider important, or not. They sometimes choose to ignore certain situations but can’t if the gallery is overly participating. Let the handler and scout do their jobs and get the dog to move to the front on its own!!! Their other comment is that too many handlers are only pointing out their charges faults, such as pointing piles of feathers,, or heading down a deer trail.
