The site of the 2005 GSCA National Championships & Field Trial were held on the Charlie Miller Ranch Wildlife Management Area near Sprague Washington. Sprague is located some 30 miles west of Spokane on I-90. The climate here is quite arid, having only 11 inches of precipitation annually. As one can imagine, given the lack of moisture and cattle grazing, the ground cover is very short on the majority of the course to non-existent in others. The area is also limited in topsoil, most of the area is composed of basalt flats, ridges and buttes. The volcanic rock is adverse to the pads on some dogs.

The course is a clockwise loop starting just outside of the parking area in a small draw. The course heads across this draw east then up a slight rise. This plateau lasts for some 200 yards and then drops in elevation in to a small dry lakebed. To the left of this lakebed is a basalt bluff, which has been coined “The Move” by local trialers. The course winds around the lakebed and then rises in elevation to a flat. The first water tank is some 10 minutes in an east direction from castoff, then the course sweeps to the south. A lake makes up the eastern border of the course with a vertical drop to the water, hence the term gorge. Parallel to the gorge is a basalt bluff that has scattered pine trees and brush at the base. The area between the two is a grassy flat with the bluff having a near vertical face. At about 30 minutes the course rises to a basalt plateau that has small grass covered humps scattered. The course now travels northwest for approximately 2-3 minutes then drops into a rather large dry lakebed. The western border of the lakebed is a steep faced basalt ridge. The face has a ledge about one halfway to the plateau. This grassy ledge is wide enough to travel by horse in some areas and by foot in others and is a spot in which some breathtaking birdwork was witnessed. This ridge ended in a point that then fell back into the lakebed and the bulk of the dogs finished their 45-minute course here. Others that lacked birdwork, or were fleet of foot, needed additional course.

Brace 1

1a FC/AFC Tomar’s Victory Renegade (Nike) o/h: J. Grunbok

1b Sagemoor’s Western Skies (Harley) o: L. Green & P. Langley h: T. Cardwell

First brace cast at 8:08. Both dogs across the flat to the first rise, Harley working shorter of the two, Nike makes the tabletop first and runs the edge from left to right. At 9:00, as we ride across the top, we see Nike making a cast to the “The Move”. Both dogs animated on the go, Nike the more determined. At 12:00 Nike on point just past where the course turns to the south, she’s found on the right side on the upper level, level tail and intense. Bird is flown and all is in order. At 14:00 Trena elects to pick-up Harley. Nike makes a slight backward cast, but the scribe believes she was keying off the group with Harley. At 18:00 in the left grassy flat parallel to the gorge, by the pines, Nike hunts it thoroughly. 19:00, in the water tank. This tank is the start of the major grassy flat area. 20:00 Nike seems to have lost her focus/flow to the course, having trouble finishing her cast and is quartering into the wind. 27:00 deer on course, but Nike ignores them. Nike found standing at 30:00 at the southern part of the course, handler relocates, dog thoroughly hunts the area, handler mounts and goes on, 34:00 seems to be tracking a running bird. Handler calls dog in for water at 36:00. Nice performance for a veteran dog.

Brace 2

2a FC/AFC Par’s Falcon On the Prowl (Tiger) o: G. & S. Churton h: R. Smith

2b Frontier Late Arrival (Maggie) o: F. Elduen & R. Oreskovick h: R.J. Marquardt

Brace 2 breaks away at 9:08 Both dogs away smartly, showing plenty of animation, Tiger very smoothly gaited. At 12:00, both dogs in the water where the course turns to the south. Both dogs are working close. As the course runs parallel to the gorge, both dogs maintain their close working pattern. This brace runs out of course before time so the pair head towards hunted ground. At 44:00 Tiger called on point. No bird produced. Both birdless.

Brace 3

3a FC/AFC Sandy Creek Skedaddle (Rebel) o/h: K. Kohles

3b Teutoburger Wald Sugar Magnolia (Maggie) o: B. & C. Ulness h: T. Cardwell

Brace 3 off at 10:10 Maggie with an impressive opening move up the first rise. Both dogs very busy, at 15:00 Rebel’s course lacking flow at this time. 20:00 Trena sends Maggie to the rock fence on the right side of the course, Ken takes Rebel there as well. 2-3 birds in the air under the Pine. It appears to be a stop to flush, as handler approaches and fires his gun another bird jumps. It’s unclear whether Rebel had the birds pointed, or if it was a stop to flush. At 43:00 past the big lakebed, Maggie cards a stand up find on the side of the ridge. Handler relocates after extended flushing attempt. Maggie relocates, points, handler flies the bird, all in order. Judges state that Rebel’s birdwork was a find.

Brace 4

4a FC/AFC The Carolina Connection (Ollie) o: B. & J. Holloway h: B. Holloway

4b Sierra Nevada Hot Pursuit (Trouble) o: S. & C. Farnham h: T. Cardwell

Brace 4 leaves 11:10 Both dogs away boldy, Charley ranging farther of the two. Charley is seen running left to right on the ridge left of “The Move” At 9:00 Charley seen under a bird, picked-up. At 10:00 before the course swings south Trouble appears to have a snoot full of weed seeds or something as he has a sneezing session which lasts for some 3-4 minutes. At 25:00 Trouble on point near the rock fence some 60 yards off the ridge on the flat by the twin pines. Handler has a little trouble finding the bird. Bird is produced, all in order. Handler elects to pick-up at 43:00. Seems the handler believes the dog was suffering the effects of the sneezing.

Break for lunch, running resumes at 1:15 the light breeze has become a wind now and the temp is around 70

Brace 5

5a NFC/FC/AFC Mcgovern’s Rave Review (Ray) o: C. Mcgovern h: T. Cardwell

5b NFC/FC/AFC Prairie Star High Noon (Cooper) o: D. & M. Morf h: J. Chapman

This brace breaks away 1:15 Both dogs with a strong aggressive start. Both in the water tank at 10:00. Ray has a stop to flush at 19:00 and the same for Cooper at 21:00. Cooper appears to be having a hard time of figuring out the course and continues on, Ray runs a nice gun dog course forward and pleasing to watch but to no avail.

Brace 6

6a Tomar's Renegade Cracker Jack o: A. Boyd h: T. Cardwell

6b Gordon Hill Odyssey o: S. Desilver h: J. Chapman

Brace 6 2:19 Crackers out of the starting gate like a rifle shot, Dessa working much closer. At 20:00 Dessa in tank, Crackers going away well to the front. Dessa appears to be struggling, probably the heat. At 30:00 Dessa on point at the southern most part of the course. She’s found on top of the ridge, pointing in a grass knoll. Crackers in the lake bed below. Handler flys the bird for Dessa, all in order. The bird flys down the ridge in front of Crackers, which he elects to chase. Crackers is picked up. At 40:00 Dessa’s working close, within 100 yards or so. At 44:00 Dessa intense on point, handler relocates to no avail. Crackers, to this point, was the most powerful dog on the ground, displaying a smooth reaching gait.

Brace 7

7a FC Prairie Star First Edition o: D. & M. Morf h; J. Chapman

7b Falcon’s Wingspan o/h: P. Sanborn

Brace casts off at 3:17 Both dogs take the first rise in short order. Marge works the ridge from right to left, then left to right. Solo comes back and works for Pat for a sort time. Both dogs very well gaited and exhibit an animated way of going, Solo appearing to be the faster of the two. At 19:00 Marge called on point in the aspens on the left near the gorge. Tail near 10:00, an intense find. The hander flys the bird, Marge never lets down, all in order. The produced bird comes from the trees in front of Solo, a minor breach in manners occurs and she is picked up. As the course goes south into the south wind Marge is having a hard time punching into the wind, her ground pattern is short to the front, and perhaps 50 yards either side. At 34:00 Marge scores a small covey before the dry lake bed on a grass knoll. Level tail, all in order.

Brace 8

8a Perpetual Motion Bright Star o: M. & W. Czarnecki h: M. Czarnecki

Bitch in season Brace 8 4:10 Driver h/Matt Czarnecki Driver has a merry way of going, but very handy. At 36:00 Driver encounters a walking bird, a minor lapse in manner occurs and is ordered up.

End of first day

Brace 9

9a DC/AFC Tartana Cutty Sark o:S. Desilver, H. Wachuta & M. Goodwin h: J. Chapman

9b AFC Timberfin Blazing Teal o/h:C. Findley

Brace 9 break away at 8:20 under sunny cloudless skies, although cool it promises to heat up as yesterday did. From the cast off both dogs quarter their way to the first rise, Teal leading the way. At 9:00 Teal on point right of “The Move” on a rock outcropping. Teal exhits good intensity with an 11:00 tail. Bird is flown, all in order. At 13:00 Teal has a stf just past the first water tank on the right hillside. At 14:00 after being sent on after the stop to flush he points again, handler flushes to no avail. Cutter appears to be having trouble figuring the course out. Cutter moving to the front down the trail, he encounters a covey sunning which causes him problems. At 21:00 near where Cutter had trouble, Teal points. After an extensive flushing attempt the handler relocates the dog. Teal charges around with purpose but with no luck. Teal takes the left edge, near the gorge, handler calls him in to water and then sends him to the right towards the rock fence. Teal can’t seem to decide if he should hunt the rock edge or the grassy flat as we travel south. At 36:00 we climb out of the bowl and head back towards camp. Teal hunts the upper ledge of the dry lakebed, which not many dogs have worked. A find at time for Teal, this bird is a runner, but does fly, all in order.

Brace 10

10a Hacasak Spellbound’s Gone With The Win o:C. Gold & M. Goodwin h: Jesse Chapman

10b Sierra Nevada Hot Wheels o:A. Boyd h: T. Cardwell

Brace 10 breaks away at 9:20. Both dogs quickly to the first rise, Jack leading exhibiting eye catching gait. On top of the right-hand ledge at 16:00 on the north south path near the gorge, a 20-30 covey jumps from the takes flight, both dogs had been in the area. At 18:00, Jack cards a find at the southern end of the right-hand rock ridge, before the 2nd water tank. After the second water tank Rhett makes a huge cast across the grassy bottom the south rim of the course. Handler elects to pick-up Rhett at 34:00, that cast coupled with the heat has taken its toll. Jack circles the top of the same ridge which Rhett made his cast to. While his handler is still coming down into the lakebed, Jack is well to the front up on the ridge across the lakebed when he points. He exhibits nice style and intensity, a bird is produced and all in order. The handler casts him off and back up the ridge he goes. He hunts the ridge to the tip and birds are in the air. Jack exhibits proper manners. At time Jack is seen moving forward strongly.

Brace 11

11a Countdown's Duncan Mac Farlane o; L. Barnett h: D. Hoke

11b DC/AFC Carolina’s All Hat, No Cattle o: B. & J. Holloway h: B. Holloway

This brace leaves at 10:20 and both hunt their way to the first rise. Duncan scores a find at 8:00. This reporter never saw the brisk bird work. Stetson has a sideways looping pattern at the moment. Both dogs turn to the south after getting into the 1st water, Stetson hunting the left and Duncan hunting the right. Stetson points just after the wire fence at 15:00. Intense, tail slightly above level. Stetson never moves a muscle as his handler flushes a rather large covey of 18-20 birds. At 34:00 after we climb out of the grassy flat when Stetson points on basalt flat before the lakebed. Once again he exhibits a level tail. This chukar prefers running to flying and the handler gives chase. The judge instructs the handler to fire and all is in order. As we view across the lakebed Duncan is seen hunting the upper tier of the ridge, a very nice sight. Stetson drops into the lakebed and makes a long cast down the right side of the would be shore. Duncan drops down off the ridge and goes to the front in a pleasing gun dog pattern and has a level tailed find at time.

September 22 and 23, 2005

Judges: Jim Absmeier and Robert Wire

22 dogs entered; 22 dogs started

Brace 1

1a Sierra Nevada Hot Pursuit (Trouble)

1b SW She's All Woman (Peeps)

First brace breaks away at 12:09 PM on Thursday, September 22. Trouble makes a big, forward cast and is quickly out of sight. Peeps is also working to the front, but at a medium range. We catch up to Trouble again with 40 minutes remaining. Both dogs continue to work to the front at a medium to wide range and check out the rock ledges and other bird objectives. Trouble has the first find a few yards after the first water stop at 32 minutes remaining. Peeps honors and both dogs show good intensity with level tails. A chukar is flushed and both dogs show broke through the flush and fire. With 21 minutes remaining, Trouble establishes point at a rock outcrop. She's standing with high head and tail and good intensity. She pops up a bit on the front end to watch the bird fly away but doesn't move her feet. Trouble is collected by her handler and they move on. Peeps has gotten ahead during Trouble's birdwork and is no longer in sight. With 10 minutes remaining, Peeps establishes a point and Trouble backs. Both dogs are showing level tails and lack a bit in intensity, but Peeps handler finds she is pointing a bird bag that was lost earlier in the day. Both dogs are moved on by their handlers. During the time that the dogs were separated, Peeps pointed and recovered another lost bird bag. Both dogs finished moving forward but at shortened range. Clearly the afternoon heat and cloudless sky had an impact.

Brace 2

2a Sagemoor's Western Skies (Harley)

2b FC/AFC Sandy Creek Skedaddle (Rebel)

Brace 2 takes off at 1:17 PM. These two males spend a bit of time checking each other out and aren't immediately interested in running. When they get themselves sorted out, they move out at medium range and cover the course well. Eleven minutes into the brace the dogs hit the first water stop. Harley moves on after water. With 33 minutes remaining, Rebel begins to look birdy but the handler lets him work out the scent before calling point. When Rebel establishes a definite point, his handler makes the call and begins to hunt for the bird. After several minutes and a relocation, Rebel's handler is unable to produce a bird and, taking a non-productive, moves his dog on. With 24 minutes remaining, Rebel takes advantage of another water station; Harley has been picked up at his handler's discretion. With 15 minutes remaining, Rebel establishes a stylish point at the base of a rock ledge. His handler works the base and top of the ledge but is unable to produce a bird. Rebel is relocated and locks into another stylish point. Unfortunately, only a large pile of feathers from a fresh hawk kill is found. Rebel is forced to move on without a flush. At time, Rebel was moving well to the front and was climbing ledges to check for game.

Brace 3

3a Frontier Late Arrival (Maggie)

3b Sierra Nevada Hot Wheels (Jack)

Brace 3 takes off at 2:15 PM. With 38 minutes remaining, Maggie is seen standing on the next rise, pointing with good style. The handler flushes the bird easily and Maggie is steady to wing and shot. Jack, who took a wrong turn at the "Chukar bowl" has been rounded up by his scout and is back on course. Both dogs are running big, hanging it out on the ridges and are happy to take advantage of a water station with 30 minutes remaining. After the water break, both dogs continue to cover the course aggressively. At 7 minutes remaining, Jack's scout finds him on point on the top of a butte. The handler, judge, and scribe head up to handle the find. Jack is standing with a level tail. His bracemate, Maggie passes through the area, but doesn't stop to honor Jack's find. Jack's bird is flushed and his handler moves him on. Maggie, who has just returned to the area, goes on point near where Jack had been pointing. Her handler has just reached the top of the butte and attempts to locate a bird, but decides she is pointing the scent of the bird that was just flushed. With about 4 minutes remaining, Maggie's handler moves her on. At 2 minutes remaining, Jack has a stop to flush on the top of an outcrop. He froze when the bird lifted, watched it fly off, then moved on in the opposite direction. His handler did not dismount or fire.

Brace 4

4a FC Prairie Star First Edition (Marge)

4b DC/AFC Carolina's All Hat, No Cattle (Stetson)

Brace 4 breaks away at 3:14 PM. Immediately off the break away, Stetson tries to get too familiar with his female bracemate. Marge demonstrates her displeasure and Stetson decides the safer option is to turn his attention to running. With 40 minutes remaining, Stetson establishes a point on the far side of the "Chukar bowl" and his handler is working the find. Marge, who was ahead of Stetson, is now out of sight. The bird is finally located about 4 inches from Stetson's nose. In the process of flushing the bird, Stetson's handler kicks dirt in his face and fires the blank gun very close to his ear. As a result, Stetson sits down on point. With 22 minutes remaining, both dogs are together again and are running at a short range and into a very heavy wind. Marge had no bird contact while the two dogs were separated. With about 15 minutes remaining, Stetson hits a point on a low ridge. Marge, who was ahead of Stetson, goes on point on the very next ridge allowing the scribe to see both dogs on point. Stetson's bird cooperatively flushes itself and his handler collects up his dog. Marge's bird is much less agreeable and her handler has to chase the bird quite a distance before it will flush. Marge takes a couple steps during the chase but is steady to wing and shot and her handler moves her on. With 8 minutes remaining, Stetson establishes a point on a steep slope, pointing uphill. His handler spends several minutes climbing up and down the ridge trying to locate the bird. He tries a relocation, but is still unable to produce game. With about 1 minute remaining, Stetson's handler opts to take a non-productive. Marge had no other bird contact in the brace.

Brace 5

5a FC/AFC Tomar's Victory Renegade (Nike)

5b Gordon Hill Odyssey (Dessa)

Brace 5 left several minutes before the scribe returned from brace 4 so the Judges' Marshal provided details of the run. With 20 minutes remaining in the brace, Dessa was picked up at her handler's discretion. Nike had bird contact at 10 minutes. At 17 minutes, Nike had a very stylish point that required her handler to climb up a rock ledge, well out of sight of her dog, in order to flush the bird. The dog was steady to wing and shot and was moved on by her handler. At 32 minutes, Nike had another point but a bird could not be produced. Her handler was forced to take a non-productive.

Brace 6

6a Countdown's Duncan MacFarlane, JH (Duncan)

6b Bye

Brace 6 is the first brace of the day on Friday, September 23. The day is cool with high clouds, but promises to warm up quickly. Because Duncan's scheduled bracemate is in season, she is dropped to the end of the stake and, with no other bye dog, Duncan is forced to run alone. The brace begins at 7:15 am. At 43 minutes remaining, a large covey of birds flushes wild about 30 yards to Duncan's left. He stops to acknowledge the flush, then moves on. Duncan is running at a medium range and keeping busy although he is mainly staying on the flat and isn't making full use of the rock ledges and ridges where the birds are generally found. At 17 minutes remaining, the judges order Duncan up when he encourages a bird to fly rather than pointing it.

Brace 7

7a FC/AFC The Carolina Connection (Charley)

7b AFC Timberfin Blazing Teal (Teal)

Brace 7 breaks away at 8:00 am. The two males have a minor altercation after the start and are separated by their handlers. They move on and are both running strongly forward with good range and aggressive style. With 39 minutes remaining, Teal is seen standing on point on the top of the far edge of a small valley. The dog, silhouetted against the morning sky, shows excellent style with high head and 11 o'clock tail. Before the handler can get up the ridge, a couple birds are seen to pop and land 10 or 15 feet further ahead of Teal. He remains staunchly on point and, upon his handler's arrival, shows steady to wing and shot. Charley, who apparently came up to the pointing dog from the backside of the ridge, is ordered up by the Judge for failure to honor. At 26 minutes remaining, the Judge's Marshal parts company from his horse and Teal's handler, who is an EMT, stops running her dog to assist the fallen official. Her scout catches Teal and waits while the Marshal is assessed for injuries. After about 8 minutes, Teal's handler determines that the Judges' Marshal does not appear to be badly hurt and turns his care over to other gallery members with first aid training. A truck has been called for and will be used to transport him off course. The delay as noted by the judges and will be credited to the dog at the end of the official clock. Teal resumes with wide range and an aggressive, forward style of running. He climbs the rock ledges seeking game and goes on point high up a steep ridge. The ridge is too steep for horses, so Teal's handler heads up on foot to handle the find. The judges and gallery have an excellent view from the valley floor. Teal, who is standing with high style and good intensity, remains steady through wing and shot. Teal and his handler carefully pick their way back to the valley floor where the dog is watered at one of the water stations. Teal finishes the brace running strongly at good range.

Brace 8

8a FC/AFC Falcon on the Prowl (Tiger)

8b Teutoburger Wald Sugar Magnolia (Maggie)

In brace 8, both dogs are running at a looping side-to-side pattern, rather than reaching to the front. With 38 minutes remaining, Tiger encounters a walking bird and helps it into the air rather than pointing. The dog is ordered up. With 31 minutes remaining, Maggie is on point at the base of the rock ledge on the dry lake bad. The flushing attempt is extended and Maggie self-relocates a couple of times. Maggie's handler picks her up, as she would be out of contention for a placement.

Brace 9

9a DC/AFC Tartana Cutty Sark, JH (Cutter)

9b Tomar's Renegade Cracker Jack (Crackers)

Brace 9 releases at 10:22 am. At 22 minutes out, Cutter is on point at the base of a rock ledge, by two pines and other cover. The birds are produced and all is in order. Cutter's handler moves him on. At 26 minutes out, Cutter is seen under a bird and is picked up. Crackers is picked up a couple minutes later at hander's discretion.

Brace 10

10a NFC/NAFC FC/AFC Prairie Star High Noon (Cooper)

10b Hacasak Spellbounds Gone With the Win (Rhett)

Brace 10 breaks away with both dogs moving out with wide range and aggressive style. Both dogs are taking the rock ledges and hitting objectives. With 18 minutes remaining, Cooper is called on point to a covey of walking birds at the base of a rock ledge. His scout had to locate him because the handler, judges, and gallery are on the top of the ridge and Cooper was below ground level and out of sight. The dog is pointing with god intensity and high head and tail. He is steady through the chasing of the covey, their flush and the shot. His handler then moves Cooper out of the area. At the judges' direction, Cooper's handler takes him on a wide swing to avoid the covey that is still running around at the base of the ridge, rather than dropping down into the valley as usual. Rhett is feeling the heat and has shortened up considerably. At 15 minutes remaining, Rhett is picked up at his handler's discretion. Cooper continues without his bracemate and is still running strongly. As time is reached, the dog is not in sight. As the judges call time, the handler and judges crest a ridge and see Cooper standing on point in the valley below. The judges instruct the handler to work the find. The find is a running covey and birds are produced. Cooper maintains good style through the wing and shot. That concludes brace 10.

Brace 11

11a Falcons Wingspan (Solo)

11b DC/AFC Rice Creek B'Zuka Wynd Dancer (Zuke)

Brace 11 breaks away with both dogs moving off well. Solo is ranging at a medium distance but is making looping side casts that require her scout to bring her back to the course. Zuke is staying more forward but is working at a shorter, gun dog-style course. Neither dog is aggressively hitting the rock ledges where experience has shown us the birds are to be found. At 13 minutes remaining, Zuke is seen on point on the side of the steep ledge bordering the dry lakebed. Birds can be seen walking in front of the dog and a couple flush wild causing Zuke to take a couple steps. The other birds continue to move in front of Zuke but he holds steady waiting for his handler to reach him. Zuke's handler climbs up the rocks to her dog and, in the excitement, creates the handler error of collaring her dog before firing her gun. With 7 minutes left, Solo is seen pointing a bird on a low ridge. While approaching the pointing dog, the mounted handler inadvertently flushes the bird and it's too much pressure for Solo who goes with the bird. Solo is ordered up. Zuke, who has been allowed to continue, finishes at a close range.

Brace 12

12a FC/AFC Perpetual Motion Bright Star, JH (Driver)

Brace 12 is the bitch in season that was originally braced as the "b" dog in brace 6. Driver is under the weather so her handler decides not to push her and to only leave her down long enough to see if he can get her onto a bird. The handler and judges abbreviate the course, focusing on areas of past bird finds, but are unable to run her into any birds. At 21 minutes remaining, Driver's handler elects to pick her up.
