Summer Holidays

Peach Day Parade 1950's

Warner: Probably my favorite time of the year was the summer. I loved the 4th of July, 24th of July, and Peach Days because you always got to sleep out with friends. We would spend the whole day finding the perfect spot to sleep either in someone's barn or haystack. It had to be secret so the big kids wouldn't duck you (throw a bucket of water on you.) One time we tried to fry a chicken and bake potatoes. I think we ate raw chicken and hard potatoes.

The next day we always got a quarter to spend. I always bought a root beer or orange soda for 5 cents and for 10 cents you could go to a movie in the afternoon. That would

leave me 10 cents. You could buy a candy bar, popcicle or pop corn for 5 cents. A quarter would go a long way. On Peach Days there was a parade and at night they had the fights and a dance afterwards. There were games in the park and the whole town would be there. They had money in a haystack and you could dive for it if you wanted. I never did that and I don't think I ever won a race.

The next day we would go up to the fairgrounds and look for coins under the bleachers. People would throw coins to the fighters and some of the coins would fall down under the bleachers so you could find quite a bit of money the next day. Blair was especially good at this.
