Hurricane High School

All of the Wood kids went to Hurricane High School. It was just across the street from their house and played an important part of all of their lives. It was built during the depression with the help of the WPA. Since there was only one high school for the whole area (Hurricane, LaVerkin, Touquerville, Virgin, Rockdale, Springdale) and they went to high school from the 7th grade to the 12th grade, everyone in the community knew each other.

Arlington: "Blair was Student Body President when I was in the 7th Grade. I was always pretty proud of him. It was neat to see him give speeches and such."

In my Junior Year (1953) I was Junior Prom Manager. I remember putting up the decorations, planning the program, etc. Lots of work. It was called Deep Purple

In my senior year I ran for Student Body President against Don Nuttall. It was Benita Jennings who talked me into it. I never would have done it on my own. 1951

I loved to play football. I started playing on the varsity team when I was in the 9th Grade. I was always bigger than most of the kids my age and that made me tough at football. In my senior year I broke my foot and couldn't play. I lost all interest in high school and signed up for the Air Force.1953

I remember going to St. George and Kanab for the group festivals and then six of us got to go to Salt Lake to sing in the State Choir. I remember getting in trouble because I stepped on a picture of a panther that was on the floor of West High School. I didn't know it was sacred territory. To me, it was just a panther. 1953

I was in the musical "The Mocking Bird". I played a pirate. 1953
