6th/7th Grade Music
All 6th and 7th grade students will participate in one trimester of vocal music class at GMS. During their music trimester, they will meet for music class for one period every other day (alternating days with PE).
The objectives of this class are to:
Learn and practice rehearsal skills appropriate for a choral music ensemble.
Learn music theory and the vocabulary of music to strengthen music-reading skills.
Learn and practice vocal techniques needed for healthy singing.
Learn about and gain appreciation for music from a variety of cultures and historical time periods.
Learn and apply performance skills and audience etiquette.
Grades for this class will be determined according to the three grading categories:
Class participation/ensemble skills
Class assignments.
Performance participation
Points given in each of these categories will add up to one final grade for the trimester. This final grade will either be pass (70% and above) or fail (69% and below). A failing grade is not allowed within Gretna Public School's grading philosophy. If a student fails an assignment, Mr. Avery will work individually with the student to help master the material and receive a passing grade.
Class Participation/Ensemble Skills - A weekly participation grade will be given to each student. These grades will be based on what Mr. Avery can observe of each student’s participation, cooperation, and contribution to the choir.
Class Assignments - Written assignments will be completed in class and will give students practice at music theory, vocabulary, and other music-literacy concepts.
Performance Participation - A final performance is an important part of accumulating and assessing everything that has been learned throughout the trimester. This performance is scheduled for toward the end of each trimester and will be held in the GMS gym. The start time for each performance is 7:00pm, and students should report by 6:40pm. Students are required to stay for the entire concert; learning and using appropriate audience etiquette is part each student’s performance grade.
Participation in this concert is a required (and fun!) part of each student’s grade. Please put the date/time in your calendar to avoid any conflict. If a scheduling conflict arises that prohibits a student from attending the concert, please let Mr. Avery know as soon as possible, so an alternate assignment can be given and completed. This concert is free to the public. Family and friends are encouraged to attend!

Performance Attire - For our performance, students should dress nicer than they would during the school day. Dress shirts, dress pants, dress shoes, skirts with a nice top, and dresses all work well. There is no need to buy something new specifically for this performance; the nicest outfit you have in your closet will work just fine.
Since a trimester is such a short part of the school year, students are encouraged to participate in one or more of the additional choirs offered at GMS. Information is posted in the links below.
