TRIVIA
From the journal of Georges Steil, May 1944
‘Another dream about L last night. Still no happy ending. Even in my dreams she says no. Our last farewell feels an eternity ago. According to this journal 18 days is now an eternity. 79 years, old boy – I can’t complain at that, not when my countrymen and women are dying in their droves in their youth. This body wouldn’t make it to her home now and she won’t come to me. If I sent one of the others to fetch her she might, and she’d resent me for it. That’s not how I want her to remember me. Bad enough she’ll think of Georges Steil as the broken down old man. I get to remember her in her prime, though her plight still brings a tear to my eye. She’s only here to be close enough to save me if things turn bad and with my death she has no friends in the world. Eternity is a long time to be alone.’
