It occurred to me the other day that according to my bookcase I am governed by 76 rules.
Let’s do the math …
There are two rules in the great commandment.
10 rules in the Ten Commandments.
There are seven habits of highly effective people.
The seven secrets of effective fathers.
The seven laws of teaching
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership
And The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing.
And then there’s the smart aleck, “First Break All the Rules!”
A lot of people with a lot of advice.
But ultimately, God would suggest, maybe not all worth that much.
“Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men,” Isaiah relays from the Lord. “Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.”
Or in other words, like another book on the shelf, “Let’s Get Real or Let’s Not Play.”
“Accept, O Lord, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws.” Psalm 119:108
