Mary Gardiner

1882

Mary was born in Chalford, Gloucestershire on 18 June 1882, the fifth child of Elizabeth Hewer and William Gardiner. At this time, the family were living in Dimhillsdale (now Dimmel’s Dale) in Chalford.

1891

The 1891 census shows the family living in Chalford. William and his son William Edward were on a barge on the canal at Gloucester.

A descendant recalls her mother telling her that Mary (and probably her siblings too) used to accompany her father, William, on journeys on his barge through Swindon.

1895

At some point after September 1895, Mary started work at the local stick factory in Chalford, probably Dangerfield’s at Bliss Mills. They produced walking sticks and umbrella sticks.

1901

The 1901 census shows Mary's occupation as a varnisher at the stick factory.

1904

Mary married Edgar Arnold of Frampton Mansell in Swindon. Edgar worked at the GWR railway works in Swindon.

1911

By 1911, Mary and Edgar were living at 10 Drew Street in Swindon, where they were to remain until the 1950s.

Mary died on 18 December 1953 at 10 Drew Street.

The funeral of Mrs Mary Arnold (71), of 10 Drew Street, Swindon, has taken place at Whitworth Road Cemetery. She was the wife of Mr Arnold, a retired railway employee, and is survived by him and six sons and five daughters. The service was conducted was conducted by the Rev. C. Sidney Hall.
