Workshop products

The March 12, 2013 workshop created a few products. These are the survey responses from participants, a collection of tips for flipping a classroom, and plans for flipping a course. See information about each of these below.

The results of our pre-workshop "lecture" materials and survey provide a snapshot of how many attendees completed the work, what their previous experience was, and what knowledge they had coming into the workshop. The text on the right is a collection of response fragments from the last survey question, "In your view, what is the flipped classroom?"

Tips & takeaways produced by the workshop attendees:

• Commitment of resources - money, time, tech support - necessary for initial flipping
• Consider gradual flip
• System for delivery or instruction YOU control
• You as instructor need to be willing to change in the face of "failure" or difficulties, problems which arise. It's "OK" if it doesn't work.
• Clearly identify goals for an activity
• Strategic about video and other resource - what is appropriate and available
• Advanced preparation - including in-class technology needs
• Pick appropriate physical environment and classroom resources
• make sure level of responsibility is appropriate to student level - expectations for doctoral level courses may be different than undergrad
• Expectations for pre-class activity - use the material to connect to student's career, real-life, etc.
• Examine syllabus to see what you're already flipping
• You can have a flipped classroom without filming lectures
• Start small - you don't have to do it all at once
• Carefully consider whether flipping is appropriate for your course - it may not be appropriate for your course
• Not necessarily "all or nothing" - consider "degrees of flipping," or how much you want to "flip"
• Consider whether all students are "ready" for the flip or they need an introduction to material or the method first
• Can students only learn things that can be presented in a 3 minute video? Is there other engagement that needs to happen along with the "technology" component?
