Gov. Snyder joins President Obama in honoring Washington Navy Yard shooting victims
LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today honored the victims of the shootings in the Washington Naval yard, and noted President Obama’s call for American flags to be flown at half-staff. Flags should be flown at half-staff until sunset, Friday, September 20th.
“The men and women of our armed forces -- and the civilians who help them -- work to protect and defend our country and our freedoms,” Snyder said. “They deserve our appreciation and respect.
“The senseless violence that claimed the lives of people today and injured others in the Washington Navy Yard is unthinkable, and leaves a mark of sadness on the hearts of all Michiganders.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the killed and hurt today, along with their friends and colleagues and all of the brave men and women serving our country and putting themselves in harm’s way.
“President Obama has ordered United State flags be flown at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings and grounds. I join him in honoring the people killed today.”
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2006-10.
