Gov. Rick Snyder orders flags lowered to honor former state Rep. Neal Nitz
LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today ordered U.S. flags within the state Capitol complex to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, April 17, in honor of former state Rep. Neal Nitz, who died Monday, April 13.
“Neal leaves behind a legacy of public service and will be remembered for his hard work and dedication serving the state and his community,” said Snyder. “I extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
Nitz, a lifelong resident of Baroda and farmer by trade, was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2000, serving the 78th District for six years. Prior to his time in the Legislature, Nitz served as a Berrien County commissioner for 10 years, including two years as chairman.
Nitz was a member of the Berrien County Farm Bureau, serving 12 years on the board of directors and 10 years as president. He was a charter member and former president of the Baroda Lions Club. Nitz earned his bachelor’s degree in applied science from Southwestern Michigan College.
A funeral was held today at St. John’s Lutheran Church in his hometown of Baroda. Nitz was 61 years old.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Saturday, April 18.
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U. S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
