Hora (Χώρα) - Astypalaia's town
Links: Homepage Astypalaia History Gallery Time off
This is where most of the islanders live; it has the mayor's office, police, school, clinic, cafes, bars, restaurants, pharmacy, shops and bank. Square white houses with blue doors, spreading down the hill are typical of the islands, especially the Cyclades to the North. The castle rises above them all and the higher part of the town includes the town square, with its eight windmills (picture below). Houses extend down the hill, along steep streets and steps, to the lower part of town which is called Pera Gialos. There's a little port and a marina which is popular with yachts in the summer.
