Valpy & Shuter families

Context

Sarah Frances Shuter née Valpy b1780 was the grandmother of Charles Perkins 1851-1905 and great grandmother of Violet Fenwick 1874-1972.

In 1932, Maud Terry, signing herself as his great aunt, shown below as "14.1. (Augusta) Maud Perkins 1849-1911 m 1875 Col. Herbert Durrel Terry 1847-1913 no issue" wrote to David Fenwick about the Valpy family

".. I think this will interest you. It was given to me when I lived at ? by a distant cousin Mrs Valpy French [see 12.1. Penelope Arabella Valpy m Rev Peter French, Burton on Trent in Valpy tree below] through whom I learnt much of the Valpy history. I think it more than likely that you never heard you had any connection with the family. Dr Valpy who was the head master of Reading School was your great great great grandfather but as it is difficult to carry these far distant relations in your mind, it has amused me to draw up a pedigree list to help you to understand. Dr Valpy was the eldest of 6 sons, the 4th son Rev Edward Valpy BD was head master of Norwich Grammar School. The Valpys originally came from Lombardy, drifted to Northern France and to the Channel Islands. In Italy the name is Volpi and one was nearly elected Pope. he came in 2nd (Pope before last I think). There was a Volpi who was financial adviser at one time to Mussolini [Count Volpi here]".

Valpy/Fenwick Connection

As shown on the Fenwick family tree Herbert George Fenwick “Bertie” 1870-1937 m1 Violet Edith Perkins dau of Charles Perkins 1851-1905 and Edith nee Hunter 1854-1929. See Perkins Connection. Charles Perkins was a son of Edward Moseley Perkins 1821-1871 of Birtley who married 1848 Octavia daughter of T Allen Shuter and Sarah Frances nee Valpy.

Extract from Ada Tyler nee Perkins's notebook. She died in 1932

The name of Valpy is of great antiquity in Jersey. Mention of the name is made more than once in the extent? of the island of 1331 and by local tradition the family is said to be an offshoot from the House of Volpi of Italy, a branch of which came to Normandy on the return of the Normans from their Italian expedition under Roger I, son of Tancred in the latter half of the 11th Century. The name in the local dialect has always been pronounced precisely as if written Volpi.

Dubois in his Dictionaries' [de la Noblesse de France] bears witness to the antiquity of the Italian and French branches of the family. It appears by this work that the family of Volpi or Vulpelli was one of antique nobility settled at Lucca before the memory of man whence a branch migrated to Florence in the 13th Century and assume the prenomen of Biliotti retaining however the original arms. The archives of Lucca Florence and Como, abound with entries of the names of members of this family who have filled the highest offices in the secular and ecclesiastical government of the respective cities.

In Jersey the original branch of the family settled in the parish of St. John of which Dr. R Valpy and his brother, Rev Edward Valpy were members.

R. Valpy esq. of the Council of Trade and of Heathland Wimbledon is the Chief of the English Branch.

Francis Valpy of St. Martin, Jersey, represents the eldest section of a branch long settled in that parish.

Obituaries in Gentleman's Magazine from notes on Dr Valpy by Canon Valpy French

Obituary of Mrs Valpy nee Catherine Chevalier, mother of Dr Valpy the head master of Reading School

Gent: Mag. 1801. June obit. At Jersey in her 70th year Mrs Valpy, widow of Mr Valpy of that island and mother of Dr Valpy of Reading. The powers of her mind were great and comprehensive: her exertions in the cause of Religion, in the service of her family and of her connections were unceasing. The affections of her heart were pure and ardent, her faith was truly evangelical, her works were truly Christian. The extent and utilities of her charities will be remembered as long as gratitude exists in her neighbourhood, of the blessings of Providence she possessed a competent store; but that store was always at the command of the poor and the distressed. Her active piety was an example to her friends and the purity of her life was so striking that it became an object of imitation. Mrs Valpy was Catherine Chevallier.

Obituary of Mrs Valpy nee Mary Benwell, wife of Dr Valpy the head master of Reading School

Gent: Mag. 1816. We have to record on June 2nd the melancholy demise of Mary, the wife of Dr Valpy of Reading. She was the sister [“or daughter” in margin (tree says dau)] of the Rev. Benwell of Trinity College, Oxford, who died in 1776 universally admired and lamented. Like her brother she died of a fever occasioned by her anxious and unremitting attention to some sick members of her family. It will not be too much to say that in her general conduct and in all the relations of life she approached as near perfection as human nature will permit. No one was acquainted with her without admiring her. She never lost a friend and she never had an enemy. Her benevolence was constantly but judiciously exerted. Eminently useful her goodness was universal. Her religion was fervent but calm, her piety was sincere and active, her devotion was warm and habitual. She did not like some gloomy ? avoid society but she never went with company without having an effective example of near perfection as human nature will permit. No one was acquainted with her without admiring her. She never lost a friend and she never had an enemy. He benevolence was constantly but judiciously exerted and eminently useful, her goodness was universal. Her religion was fervent but calm, her piety was sincere and active, her devotion was warm and habitual. She die not, like some gloomy avoid society; but she never went into company without having an effective example of cheerfulness, sweetness of temper, affability of disposition, dignity of manner and purity of life. She made all around her happy and she was happy her- self in her family, her connections and her own reflection. Towards the pupils of the establishment over the domestic part of which she presided, she acted not only as a friend but a mother. A short time ago they gave an interesting proof of their love and gratitude by presenting her with plate amounting 250 guineas. A gift the value of which was considerably increased by the endearing manner in which it was made. She has left a husband and 11 children to survive her loss, revere her memory and imitate her virtue.

Dr Valpy was born December 7th 1754 in Jersey of Richard and Catherine Valpy who lived on an Estate belonging to the family in the Parish of St. John.
