A Burke's Landed Gentry section on Alan Fenwick linked here starts with George Fenwick, said to have owned lands at Burrodon in 1527. For convenience, what follows shows him to be the 1st generation. Details for the first 8 generations are only shown here for the oldest sons (with one exception). The oldest son of the 8th generation is George Fenwick 1728 – 1811 of Lambton, Durham and it is the descendants of his sons which are then shown- sometimes in considerable detail. The Burke's entry is linked here
One of the descendants, Constantia Arnold, wrote a Memoire "Portrait of a Family" linked here. It is informative and entertaining
Written in 2017 by another descendant, Roger Mott, ‘Fenwicks of the North’ shows how eighteenth and nineteenth century Fenwicks became bankers, brewers and glassmakers which enabled them to occupy positions of power in the north and to become landowners, politicians, masters of foxhounds and owners of racehorses. This book is linked here. Alternatively, it can be read here on line - https://view.pagetiger.com/Fenwicks/Fenwicks. Also, hard copies can be ordered for £8 incl postage, from the author, rogermott303@gmail.com

Associated with the Lambton family, senior partner in Lambton’s Bank. He married in 1837 at Gretna Green, Martha Matilda Johnson 1800-1863, a fisherwoman from Cullercoats. She is understood to have been the mother of all his children in spite of their marriage taking place after they were born which was unusual at that time. There is a window in the parish church of Chester le Street dedicated to Thomas and Martha, given by their daughters. Is there any significance in the marriage taking place at Gretna Green, over 70 miles from Chester le Street and the daughters donation of this window? 4s 5dau

m2 Col. Foster Cunliffe. His son by this 1st wife was Capt Robert Lionel Brooke Cunliffe RN CBE who was Captain of HMS Milford when, in 1938, Gough Island (part of Tristan de Cunha) was claimed by the British – it is still said to be Britain’s newest island. In about 1946 he was Commodore at the Devonport barracks when Hostilities Only ratings are reputed to have mutinied.
Lucy is described as “odious” in Portrait of a Family “who married an up-and-coming parson called de Pledge … when any young man showed an interest in her daughters (she had 11 children) she chivied him away for fear of having to divulge the family skeleton [her illegitimacy] and so ruin her husband’s chance of promotion. The result was that only two married, and those very late in life”.
