Sir John Fenwick 3rd Bt & earlier trees

Last updated 8.10.2021

Possible connection to Sir John Fenwick 3rd Bt who as a Jacobite plotted against William III and was beheaded on Tower Hill in 1697. Comments and evidence to prove or otherwise this connection are sought and will be very welcome.

A horse, White Sorrel, owned by Sir John Fenwick was among items of his estate confiscated by the Crown on his attainder and a fall from that horse was responsible for William III's death. The horse purportedly stumbled when it stepped on a mole hill. In recognition of this, the Jacobites' secret toast was to “”The little Gentleman in Black Velvet”. Constantia Fenwick in her Memoire “The making of a family” (see elsewhere in this site) certainly claims him as at least associated with us. Sir John’s uncle John Fenwick was killed in 1644 at the Battle of Marston Moor, fighting as a Colonel of Dragoons on the Royalist side.

Burkes shows a Fenwick line starting with George Fenwick, alive in 1527. A pedigree that shows earlier generations starts in the 12th century. It shows that Sir John Fenwick 3rd Bt was also descended from George Fenwick’s grandfather. However, the accuracy of this pedigree is questioned. Below is what is shown for these two lines descending from George Fenwick’s grandfather, John Fenwick.

Numbers before /s [slashes) are those from the pedigree starting in the 12th century. Numbers after the /s are based on the Burkes tree where George Fenwick is shown as Generation 1. Therefore George’s grandfather is shown here as -1 and his 2 sons, William and Martin head up the lines which reach Sir John Fenwick 3rd Bt and the George Fenwick ie Burkes entry line respectively.

More on Sir John Fenwick 3rd Bt

We have a transcript of his trial. It looks genuine. Unfortunately not in a condition to scan easily so can't be linked here.

The pedigree used for much of the above (the accuracy of which is questioned) has been scanned onto many portrait sheets and can be made available.

This rude poem about Lady Fenwick may or may not be an accurate assessment of the woman but is hard to resist:

Lines 43- from “An Heroic Poem” 1681 in "Court Satires of the Restoration" by John Harold Wilson-

“But prithee, Fenwick, wherefore art though grieved?

Thy wants have by preferment been relieved;

Thy lady longed and had her wished delight;

The King dubbed her a whore and thee a knight;

And none can tell which best deserved the grace;

Thy mighty courage for her lovely face.”

Note. Fenwick. Sir John Fenwick of Fenwick, Northumberland, was knighted in 1677 and inherited as third baronet in 1682. On July 14, 1663, he married Lady Mary Howard, eldest daughter of Charles, Earl of Carlisle. The poet asserts that Fenwick was knighted because his wife was the King’s mistress. Fenwick, later an ardent Jacobite, was attainted for high treason and executed January 27, 1697

Sir John Fenwick'sThe Flower Among Them All”. Tune is here - Can anyone find the lyrics? They are said to exist.
