The Barkley family tree for the family of Charles William Barkley is shown here in three parts-
A. Earliest records to Gilbert Barkley b.1660, mainly from notes passed down to Fenwick family via Perkins's. These do not look to be very authoritative!
B. James Barkley line starting with James Barkley b1690, son of Gilbert Barkley b c1660
C. Alexander Barkley line starting with Alexander Barkley 1693-1765, son of Gilbert Barkley b c1660.
Generation numbers are intended to be consistent with other trees in the Fenwick of Lambton site.
The information below has benefited from these articles which we have recently found and which appear to provide new and authoritative information on generations 5 to 8. They were concerned in particular with a time when the Barkley family lived in and around Kirkmichael, about 10 miles south west of Cromarty. Some differences between what we found in our records and these articles, included there being no reference in the articles to the Ross family being descended from Robert Bruce. There is also no mention of Gilbert Barkely having shot a revenue man (though there is a lot on his illegal activities and probable bankruptcy). Also, it seems fairly clear that 6.2. Alexander Barkely who died in 1803 only married Christian Urquhart and that Christian Ross was in fact his mother.

One source shows him as marrying a daughter of the Robert Bruce family. This is from some notes found, the origin and accuracy of which are not clear. A brother or son -. George Barkley, Provost of Banff is mentioned in the notes

Living in Cromarty (probably here in Braehead) in 1719. "Merchant and vintner" and “innkeeper”. Jean was dau of John Morison, a mason and his wife, Ann Urquhart. Jean appears to have had a sister, Katherine who married James Forsyth. One of their sons was William Forsyth (1722-1800), a notable Cromarty figure. This is consistent with The Remarkable World where a Miss Forsyth is described as a cousin of James Forbes and Frances is quoted as saying “their grandmother and our grandmother were Morrisons and Sisters”. He probably moved from Kirkmichael to Cromarty at the time of his marriage. 4s 1dau below. There is also mention in the Cromarty parish register of Alexander b 1725 to James Barklay & Jean Moreson so he is also shown below

Ada Tyler's Notebook says "Took to the law and made a fortune and married Mrs Abercrombie with whom he eloped".
Much of what follows has been taken from Martha Shaw’s journals where more detail can be found on pages 198 and 199.
Lived in Sunbury and 28 Gower Street. Buried in a vault under St Giles Church. He was admitted 1784 as Barrister at which time described as eldest son of James Barkley which conflicts with another document which makes John the elder of the two. An article on his house in Sunbury, Halliford House can be found here. It was built c 1777, demolished 1957.
Elizabeth had previously been married 19.6.1786 to Captain Burnet Abercromby c1738-1792 MP and before that there was in 1786 a marriage between Burnet Abercromby and Elizabeth Pearce. Elizabeth's will was proved 9.10.1795 when she may have died, in spite of the year 1802 shown above.

James Forbes according to the National Library of Scotland. Shoemaker, who died sometime after 1807. Ada Tyler's notebook says "and had a necklace of black pearls which were left to my grandmother Jane Hornby and sold to Chafrey her brother" (Most likely to have been a copying mistake for something like "sold to defray the election costs of her brother". However, there are one or more references to a Mrs Cafferey with whom Frances occasionally stayed and who was an aunt of Robert Grant Shaw, the husband of Frances's daughter, Martha).
A East Church Gravestone Inscriptions document contains the following text “Placed here by Robert Forbes Shoemaker in Cromarty in Memory of ANN BARKLY his spouse who departed this life the 26th of July 1779 in the 58 year of her age and of JOSEPH FORBES his son who died the 8th of September 1778 in the 19 year of his age.
Sacred to the memory of James Forbes Esq late Calcutta in the East Indies where he resided 36 years he had lately arrived & on the day if his return to his Native town he fell ill & died. on 26th day of August 1810 aged 55 years

John Forbes according to the National Library of Scotland. She was buried in Calcutta. Frances and Charles William Barkley stayed in Calcutta with James and his wife. On James' return to England, he fell ill and requested the presence of his cousin Charles William who was present when he wrote a codicil to his will and dying two days later. This codicil caused his estate to be left 1/6th to each of John and Charles William Barkley [cousins - sons of his Uncle Charles}, 1/6th to his illegitimate son, Robert, 1/6th to William Forbes of Edinburgh who may have been a brother. 1/12th each to Mary Hunt and her brother and 1/24th to each of Charles William Barkley's children Jane, John Charles, Martha and Charles Francis.

Per local records. Not found elsewhere.
She was the daughter of Richard Willis d. 1781. Ada Tyler's Notebook shows Richard Willis to have been the Bishop of Winchester who had the same name but the Bishop lived 1664-1734. What is known is that Richard Willis, inherited the estate of Digswell Manor in Hertfordshire. Elizabeth was spoken of as an only daughter but was in fact the co-heiress with her sister, Anne Willis 1745-1808 who married 1774 Captain Sir Thomas Rich 5th Bt (later Vice-Admiral and MP for Marlow) 1733-1783 whose family were Lords of the Manor in Sonning. She sold the estate in 1786 so must have been a very rich lady and presumably this goes some way to explain why John Barkley (son of Andrew's brother Charles) married his uncle’s widow. Digswell was sold in 1785 to Lord Cowper who later sold it to Ebenezer Howard who incorporated it into Welwyn Garden City. No children. Lived in Bath. "Aunt Katie has his miniature". There is a tablet on the wall of Bath Abbey in Andrew's memory also mentioning Elizabeth and nephew John Barkley (8.1. below)
7.4. Charles Barkley 1718-14.8.1774 m9.3.1742 Martha Williamson.
Captain of an East Indian Co vessel, "The Pacific". There is conflicting information about him. According to the Remarkable World, he was drowned in the Hoogley River in 1776 and renounced Martha in his will. According to seemingly authoritative version in the East India Company Records in the British Library "the Pacific Journal at 14/8/1774 states: “From Ceylon to Madras. Sunday 14 August 1774. At 3am Departed this life Captain Charles Barkley of a fever – having been ill six days only – at Noon committed his Body to the Deep”. The Journal mentions the ship being near Friars Hood, Ceylon [a mountain] visible from the ship. He was succeeded by James Williamson Chief Mate, who wrote the Journal. A newspaper record of his death in newspaper record of this death in Letter to Philadelphia 28/4/1775, in Caledonian Mercury newspaper 24/6/1775 seems inaccurate. The National Archives contains his Will dated 18 Jan 1774 (PROB 11/1017/158). In that Will he calls Martha his “dearly beloved wife”. The Will was proved on 11.3.1776, administration of Will was granted to John Barkley (son), after Gilbert Slater and James Farquharson, executors, renounced the execution of it and Martha Barkley also renounced the letters of administration. 3s 2 dau.
8.1. John Barkley 31.1.1748-16.12.1822 m10.3.1794 Elizabeth nee Willis d. c1800
She was the widow of his Uncle Andrew Barkley (7.6. above).. "John Barkley died at his house in Princes Buildings Bath December 16 1822 buried in a vault under the Abbey church. He was brought up in the Navy with his Uncle Andrew a Capt in the Navy but afterwards went into the Indian Sea Service and commanded the Lord Hawksbury"; Inherited house in Sunbury from his uncle William. No children. He left the income from his estate to his brother Charles William with reversion to his nephew (Charles William's son 9.8 below). Charles William died 1832 with his wife, Frances, living for a further 13 years in relative poverty as a result of the reversion and with resulting ill-feeling and legal action.

9.1. William Andrew Hippolyte Barkley b4.3.1789-1802.
Born in Mauritius (then Isle de France). "My not to be forgotten first born son died at Brigadier Hill Enfield in his 14th year, 14th November 1802 and is buried in a vault in Enfield churchyard where I hope to be laid when it shall please God to withdraw me from this mortal life". He died of scarlet fever.
The Remarkable World quotes Ida Prosser nee Denne (11.6) below as saying "My brother Cecil Denne [11.5] wrote to me he had seen the Diary of Mrs Frances Trevor Barkley, and said the account of the births of twins on one of the small islands with only an Indian woman to care for her, was very pitiful - one of the babies died". We have son other mention of there being a twin - and, of course, Mauritius is hardly a small island.
9.2. Martha "Patty" Barkley 1791-1792
Born at sea off the Cape of Good Hope, christened in Calcutta. "I lost my dear little Patty on the 15th April 1792. She died on board ship in the straits of Macassar and was buried under the shadow of a plantation of coconut palms in the Island of Celebes a Dutch settlement. Her remains having been placed in a leaden coffin in order that they might have a Christian burial. She wanted one day of a 12 month old".(She lived for 364 days, it is not clear in the Black Book if it was 16.4.1790-15.4.1791 or 16.4.1791-15.4.1792).

Said to have been a marriage against his family's wishes. Had a commission purchased for him by his Uncle John Barkley but in 1831 he decided to go into the church. Ordained Deacon 1835. 1839 became Vicar in Little Melton, near Norwich. Later Leigh, Sherborne, Dorset. 6s 4dau

"William and Edith’s promising son, Harold Barkley Winton, died flying a plane in France in the First World War. He had joined the Royal Flying Corps, the air arm of the British Army and precursor to the Royal Air Force. I hadn’t known about planes being used in this war but they were and the pilot causality rate was high. I guess the war also contributed to Harold’s three sisters never finding husbands. It looks like they might have lived together in East Sussex, which is where their deaths are recorded". 1s 3dau

10.2. John Trevor Barkley 1825-1882 m, Jane Stanley 1826-1907. In her Will, Frances Trevor Barkley left him as grandson and godson : “his beloved grandfather’s gold Chronometer or Time Piece…the said chronometer to be kept by my said Executors until the said John Trevor Barkley shall have attained the age of twenty five years old when it is to be given to him with strict injunctions not to sell or otherwise dispose of it during his life time, it being my wish that the said Chronometer should be transmitted to his to his descendants or to some other branch of the family to be preserved as a memento of the estimation in which it was held by its late lamented owner during his long and perilous voyages whilst circumnavigation the Globe, it having been found to keep time under the influence of all climates”. The Remarkable World says that nothing is known of its present destination.
He was a railway engineer overseeing the building of railways in what was then the Ottoman Empire, now Romania and Bulgaria, working together with his younger brothers Henry, George and Robert. He married the daughter of a Cumberland M.P., Edward Stanley of Ponsonby Hall. Their only child was born in Constantinople (Istanbul). See here for his obituary . 1dau

10.3. George Andrew Barkley 5.12.1826-1913. m 5.4.1859 Edith (middle name thought to be Kate making her the Aunt Kate in "1930s correspondence") Perkins 1836-1919. George was a civil engineer who worked with his older brother building railways in the Ottoman Empire. Two of his children were born in Switzerland so maybe he was working there in the mid-1860s. He rode “though Asia Minor and Armenia” with his brother Henry in 1878 (see 10.8. Henry Charles Barkley below). He married his cousin, daughter of Jane Barkley and Charles Perkins. 11.1. Henry Yarker Barkley 1861-1895. Born in Kustenjie, Turkey (now Constanta, Romania) where his parents were working. No issue
11.2. Margaret Jane Barkley 1863-1928 born in Switzerland; m Holt Waring Ridley. In the 1881 and 1891 censuses Holt Waring Ridley is listed as a merchant of Ceylon and a coffee and tea planter living in Tormoham Devon. By 1901 he was living at Broughton Hall in Staffordshire. Broughton Hall which is now the home of a mobile phone company millionaire who says the place is haunted. The story is that no elder son will live to inherit it. I am aware of Holt Waring Ridley and Margaret Barkley having one son who died in infancy.
11.3. John George Barkley 1865-1909. Born in Switzerland; m Evelyn Anstruther Dunne 1870-1909. No issue. He was a railway engineer who spent most of his life working in India, where he married, and China. He and his wife died quite young within a few weeks of each other.
11.4. William Andrew Barkley1870-1946 joined the Royal Navy and rose to the rank of Commander. After leaving the Royal Navy in 1901 he seems to have spent most of his life in Africa. He and his wife both died in Zambia in 1946. 2s

10.4. Commander Edward Barkley RN 26.1.1829-1909 m Harriet Esther Holworthy 1834-1883, A Captain in the Royal Navy. After he retired he bought land in Vancouver Island in 1887 and lived there with his family He died in a fire at his home at Westholme, Vancouver. It is thought that Frances Barkley's diary was destroyed in the fire. 1s 3dau

11.2 Florence Annie Barkley 1860-1929 m. Lt Col. George Edward Barnes 1865-1928. They moved to British Columbia after his military service in UK and South Africa, settling close to his father-in-law. 1s
12.1. George Barkley Fraser Barnes 1899-1985 m. Ellen Daphne Gillespie. A navy career encompassing both world wars. In her Acknowledgements dated 1978at the start of the Remarkable Life, Beth Hill mentions Commander George Barkley Barnes as being the owner of the "Reminiscences" which she refers to as being lodged with the British Columbia Archives in Victoria, British Colombia.
11.3. Kate Clyde Barkley 1863-1900 m. Edward Robert Hawkins 1850-1938. We don’t know much about Edward Robert Hawkins. His two sons had distinguished military careers. They were both officers in the Kings African Rifles. Edward was awarded a DSO and an OBE and Geoffrey received a Military Cross. 2s 1dau

11.4 Robert Edward Barkley 1868-1942 m. Kathlene "Kate" Evelyn Johnston 1872-1965, dau of Matthew Trotter Johnston whose name has sometimes been shown as just Matthew Trotter. Robert Edward Barkley lived in Westholme, British Columbia, establishing himself as a farmer. He served in France in the First World War. His only son, died in Singapore during the Second World War; he is remembered at Kranji. His son’s widow seems to have returned to live in the UK, where she had lived prior to her marriage. 1s
12.1 Edward "Jim" Trevor Yarker Barkley (1904-1942) m. Daphne Graham Morant Peel (1900-1987). There is also a reference to a son called James
10.5. Martha "Patty" Barkley 1831-1924 m Rev Francis Raikes 1822-1879. Rev Francis Raikes was rector of Barnham Broom, Norfolk. There are a number of well-known members of the Raikes family and quite a few of them went to India, and quite a few of them lost their lives there. 4s 5dau

Ellen and her husband moved to Argentina and remained there; I believe there are descendants still living in Argentina. There are lots of records of Dashwoods travelling by ship between UK and South America. He found the pleasure of life at Oxford too alluring, rapidly put on weight and was never again really fit enough for a first-class bowler.” It concludes “he will be remembered as a bowler of great possibilities which he lacked the dedication to develop.” My grandmother provided some inside information about the two sons in this family “Bob and Tom were at Winchester together, Tom a very good fast bowler and Bob a very good bat. Ernest had hoped they’d be the pick of the Varsity X1 but Bob died of meningitis towards the end of summer term before leaving Winchester. Tom was fast bowler for Oxford for two or three years, went down and got into a row in London with police over pistols and ammo in his rooms. It was rather hushed up and Tom went off to British Columbia to join various cousins”
I have found a 1925 newspaper report recording that Thomas Barkley Raikes was committed for trial for obtaining money by false pretences. He had hired a car and paid with a cheque that was returned dishonoured. He was also fined £2 for possessing an automatic pistol and seventeen rounds of ammunition without a license.

He was employed building railways in the Ottoman Empire from 1857 to 1870. In 1878 he returned to Turkey to join his brother, George, on a 96 day horseback journey from Constantinople (Istanbul) to Trebizond (Trabzon). He estimates that they rode for 1400 miles and spent 53 days in the saddle. This journey is described in A Ride through Asia Minor and Armenia. In later life he lived in Gloucestershire, though he undertook another railway building project in Venezuela in 1888-89. 1s 1dau

He was a vicar at Bibury, Britwell Salome and Windrush, Gloucestershire. His father was a very successful breeder of shorthorn cattle at Bapton Manor, Wiltshire. A letter written by Henry Barkley suggests he was fond of his son-in-law. “I believe he is a real good fellow and anyway he is a perfect gentleman, and I fancy it must be nicer for a woman to be subject to the usual selfishness of a man who is a gentleman that a cad. He dresses nicely, no tucks, has clean hands, has no church fads, likes an improper story, listens when I talk, and in fact is most satisfactory”.
She was born in Varna, Bulgaria. This from her father “Her father describes her traumatic arrival in the world in Bulgaria before the War: “Even in England a birth in a house is far from a pleasant event, at any rate to the male portion of the household, but it is a mere joke to one in Turkey with the thermometer at about 95 degrees in the shade, the doctor 140 miles away, and the only Mrs Gamp to be had a drunken old Irish woman”. 1dau

11.2 Macdonald Barkley 1871-1956 m. Hilda Wulsten Coote 1882-1974 Macdonald Barkley managed the estate of the Earl of Sandwich in Huntingdon. He was a Territorial Army officer and Mayor of Huntingdon in 1923. In later life he lived in Whelford, Gloucestershire. Hazel was a civil servant, Assistant Secretary, Board of Trade, and awarded an OBE. Macdonald Barkley was named after his father, Henry Barkley’s, much-loved assistant in Turkey who became sick and died. In the same book Henry Barkley wrote: “Another Mac now calls my house his home, and my sincere wish is he may grow up such another man as after whom he was named.” 1dau

After leave in England Herbert returned to India expecting Florence to follow him, but she never did. When Herbert made a visit to England Florence refused to see him. In 1913 Herbert went to court to “petition for restitution of conjugal rights”. The next year he petitioned for divorce. In the meantime Mrs Katherine Bertha Graham, nee Katherine Bertha De La Condamine, was more willing to be affectionate towards Herbert, who was named as co-respondent when her husband, Francis John Graham, petitioned for divorce in 1910. Herbert and Katherine married in Bromley in 1918 and remained there for the rest of their lives. 1s 1dau

Robert Barkley Shaw was an exceptional scholar. His early education in France, Germany and Italy made him fluent in European languages and he was a prize-winning student at Marlborough College before proceeding to Cambridge. However, throughout his early life he suffered from rheumatic fever. Doctors “declared his constitution was such that he must be kept to a quiet, unexciting life: thus his military aspirations were effectively damped, and for the same reason he was debarred, by the inability to bear the necessary physical and mental strain, from entering any of the learned professions.” (Obituary in Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society, 1879).In 1859 he went to Kangra in the Himalayas, where he settled as a tea-planter having been advised the climate would be good for his health. He showed an interest in local customs and learnt the local language. In 1868 he set out to explore the country north of the Karakoram Mountains with the aim of setting up new trade links. He was the first Englishman to visit the Silk Road cities of Yarkand and Kashgar. He returned on an official mission in 1870. His achievements were recognised by the Royal Geographical Society, who awarded him a Gold Medal in 1872, and led to him being appointed to positions in the Indian Political Department. He was British Joint Commissioner at Ladakh from 1872 to 1877 and in 1878 he became British Resident at Mandalay, where he died unmarried aged 39 a year later.

He stood for parliament, financed by his sister Jane (and lost, reputedly due to fraud..). He inherited the house in Sunbury from his uncle John Barkley in 1822. Died of typhoid in the Hotel de Hamburg in Dresden where they were staying prior to moving to their own house. He was very strongly criticised by his sister Martha in her diaries for his behaviour following the death of his Uncle John. For example, "Charles has been so wicked as to question through his lawyer John’s possession of the farm in Essex which Uncle John made over to him by a proper deed as a qualification to drawing out a shooting licence. If he was to get it, it would almost ruin John [Rev. John Charles Barkley their brother]". Also for bringing an action in the Court of Chancery regarding interest from the legacy from William Barkley
Anne's father was Robert Murray of Knapdale, a plantation in Jamaica (so presumably a slave owner). He died at sea in 1820 travelling from Jamaica to the UK, presumably quite young as only five years after his daughter was born. In a wedding announcement Annie is described as niece of the late Brigadier-General Murray, of the 16th Lancers.
Anne's mother was Ann Brown McCook (1792-1876) thought to have been born in St Ann's, Jamaica, which is where the Knapdale Estate that Robert Murray owned or managed is located. There is a baptism record; her father was Henry McCook. In 1840 she married Major George Nugent. In the marriage record she is Anne Murray, a widow, and her father is Henry McCook. There are a couple of quite interesting web pages recording the life of George Nugent and one of them refers to him marrying the widow of R Murray of Jamaica.

11.1. Henry William Denne Denne 1860-1899 m1889 Mabel Harriett Dealtry 1863-1940. Mabel was the daughter of the Ven. Thomas Dealtry a Chaplain to the East India Company and Archdeacon of Madras; on his return from India he became Rector of Swillington. Reputed to have introduced the custom of throwing confetti at weddings following the Hindu custom of the bridegroom throwing 3 handfuls of rice over his bride and she doing the same to him, as a symbol of fertility. That custom which later became confetti rather than rice was introduced in Swillington by Thomas Dealtry. Major Henry William Denne served with the Gordon Highlanders in North Africa. He was killed in action at Elandslaagte, a battle of the Second Boer War. His widow and young family went to live in Sussex. "Educated at Harrow and joined the 75th Foot January 1880, being promoted Lieutenant March 1881, Captain July 1887 and Major October 1897. He saw service in the Egyptian War of 1882 with the 1st Battallion Gordon Highlanders and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (medal with clasp and Khedive's star). He also served in the Soudan Expedition, 1884, as Transport Officer with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Tamai (two clasps); also in the Nile Expedition, 1884-85, with the River Column under Major-Gen. Earle (clasp). He held the appointment of A.D.C. in Egypt, April 1886 to September 1887, and at Malta, January 1888 to January 1889. 12.2. Mary Denne Denne 1893-1982 born in India m 1919 Kenneth Frederic Campion 1891-1950. Kenneth was the son of Frederick William Campion 1853-1900 and Mary Georgine Strapp 1861-1940. Frederick and his brother were stock jobbers on the London Stock Exchange. He was a Captain in the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment in the First World War. The Campion family house in Trumpet Hill, Reigate made a statement about their wealth.
12.3. Victor Alexander Harry Denne Denne 1899-1977 m 1946 Margaret Glen Newland 1914-1990. He followed in the footsteps of the father he never met when he joined the Gordon Highlanders. His godmother was Queen Victoria. He was a Japanese prisoner of war from 1942 to 1945. His wife, Margaret, was a nurse. Son of physician Leslie Winter Dryland 1868-1941 and Letitia Morris Hill 1870-1947. He served in the Royal Corps of Signals and was awarded an OBE in 1956. He died in the USA.
11.4. Charles Reginald Trevor Denne 1865-1906. He died in India where he was managing the Bagrakote tea estate. A plaque at St Michael's and All Angels Church, Jalpaiguri commemorates his life. He contributed towards this church, built in European style with tinted Belgian glass windows and a steeple with a bell.
11.5. Cecil Gordon Denne 1867-1926 m Mary Cecilia Stark 1880-1956 in British Columbia in 1923. Mary was the daughter of Arthur James Stark 1831-1902 and Rose Isabella Kent 1848-1918. Both her parents were accomplished artists. There is information about her father on the Wikipedia page.
Cecil was a Superintendent in the India Police. At the age of 56 he married Mary in British Columbia; three years later he died there. His widow returned to the UK; she ended her days in Netherne Hospital, Coulsdon, formerly the Surrey County Asylum, renowned for art therapy after the Second World War.
11.6. Ida Elizabeth Denne 1868-1962 m1905 Reginald David Prosser 1869-1920 in Shrewsbury. In 1908 Reginald retired from his Gloucestershire coal merchant business, Dickenson, Prosser and Cox. He and Ida emigrated to Canada the same year. Their destination was Edmonton, Alberta. They moved on to British Columbia where they became early settlers at Southbank, Francois Lake, a wilderness area about 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver. There is a record of Ida being the postmistress at Francois Lake. Reginald died there. Ida spent her last years in the town where her son lived, Kelowna, British Columbia. Per the Remarkable World.. 12.1. Ronald David Barkley Prosser 1906-1991 m Alice Wilson Pillsbury 1909-1994. Alice was the daughter of Joel Horace Pillsbury 1874-1958 and Amelia Florence Hill 1877-1941. Her parents were born in America; her father studied engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and moved to British Columbia to work as Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Assistant Harbour Engineer at Prince Rupert. Ronald started out as a mechanic and then became the owner of a garage and car dealership in Kelowna, British Columbia.
12.2 Laura Elizabeth Prosser 1909-1947 m1929 Cornelius Hardy Stanton 1909-1999 in British Columbia. Cornelius was the son of George Biddon Stanton 1882-1948 and Phoebe Jane Haines 1883-1957. His father was a farmer and Cornelius also became a farmer, though later in life he worked on boats and was a master mariner and ferry captain. The Stanton family lived at Francois Lake.
11.7. Eustace Henry Denne 1872-1952. Eustace and his younger sister, Ellen Beatrice, were both born in Coblenz (now Koblenz), Germany. There is evidence that Eustace Henry had business interests in Mombasa, Kenya (he was a partner in the firm Smith, Mackenzie and Company) and at the time of his death when residing at The Shard in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire he was described as a retired shipping agent.
11.8. Ellen Beatrice Denne 1873-1949. Like her older brother Ellen Beatrice Denne was born in Coblenz (Koblenz) and ended her days at The Shard in Minchinhampton.
11.9. Gilbert Francis Alured Denne 1876-1964 m1916 Marie Cesarsky in Victoria, Australia. Gilbert enlisted in Sydney in 1918 to fight in the 1st World War. At the time of enlistment his occupation was 'Orchardist'; later documents record his occupation as tea planter. He died in Gloucestershire.
11.10. Herbert Vincent Denne 1882-1914 m1940 Lydia Magdalen Starke 1881-1924 in Elham, Kent. Lydia was the daughter of Norfolk policeman Henry Edward Starke 1857-1948 and Elizabeth Jane Brown 1857-1944. Herbert and Lydia were both born in the UK but went to live in Canada. Four years after their marriage Herbert died in British Columbia. The next year his widow married Alfred Gillingham Watson in Vancouver.

Merchant said to have settled in Philadelphia in about 1755. He is not mentioned in the Remarkable World or the Black Book but on the evidence of that link, it seems likely that he fits in here. He appears to have had an adventurous life and including being a spy for Lord North - internet searches provide a lot of information about him. An article about his activities in America "Gilbert Barkley article A British Spy in Philadelphia" is linked here. He may have been the Gilbert Barkley said to have been a great smuggler who shot a revenue man, and then emigrated. It is not confirmed that Gilbert was in fact a brother of James and Alexander and was thought at one time to have been a son of James Barkley. When he died he was living in Walcot, Bath (6.1. below)

Aeneas Barkley or Barkly 1768-1836 (mother, Christian nee Urquhart), described often as youngest son which might have meant youngest surviving son? m 1805 Louisa Susannah Ffrith 1774-1831, dau of a Jamaica coffee planter. He was a successful sugar merchant in London with Davidson & Graham and/or Davidson, Barkly & Co. Inherited Shingleside from his father and may have inherited the Monteagle lands.
The passing of the Shingleside property to Alexander Barkley (6.2. above) and thence to Aeneas was seen by James Barkley's family as being the result of fraud. Rev. John Charles Barkley (9.4) went in 1833, the year after the death of his father Charles William Barkley (8.3) to establish what had happened to the property originally possessed by James Barkley but now in the hands of Aeneas Barkly. It was occupied by a Miss Elizabeth Barkley. He enlisted the help of Hugh Miller a distinguished local historian who confirmed that is was commonly believed that the property was now held by the wrong branch of the family. However, no records could be found to establish the case - and it was suggested that they had been deliberately destroyed by the usurping branch according to the Remarkable World. Aeneas in his will asked that the estate in Cromarty be "on no account sold or alienated".

More about the Hornby family
The Will of William Hornby (died 1800) mentioned bequests to his siblings : Joseph, Charles, Mary Langdale. Also, Priscilla Bradshaw; his "cousin" James Forbes in India; a couple of Baker cousins. Mention was made of his property, Huskards in Ingatestone, Essex. From this was found :
Parents: Joseph Hornby & Mary Baker m1721 who lived at Blackmore, Essex; Grays Inn Lane; Warwick Court (Holborn area). Joseph & Mary had Charles (bapt 1725); Susannah (1727) at Blackmore, Essex, Joseph (1738); Mary (c1739) md George Langdale; William (1741) St Andrews Holborn.
Father, Joseph Hornby was almost certainly nephew of Charles Hornby c.1671-c.1739, a lawyer (Grays Inn) and "secondary in the Pipe Office" in London (a Government post). Charles bought a lot of property in Ingatestone and Fryerning in Essex. (There was a para about him in a long history of I&F). He married (1695) Alice/Alicia Hatton, dau of Sir Robert Hatton; son Joseph died 6 months old. Widower Charles left his property to his nephews & nieces. His Will mentions godson Charles Hornby & Joseph (brother of godson), and a brother, Joseph, whom he was ashamed to call a brother! William not born at that point.
William's Will mentions his property Huskards in Ingatestone, which was one of Charles Hornby, the lawyer's, properties. William must have been a great nephew, inheriting through his father.
The reference in William Hornby's Will to his "cousin" James Forbes, is probably to his wife's (Martha) cousin. But it would appear that William Hornby knew Priscilla Bradshaw (who later married James Forbes in India).
