Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

Cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is absorbed through the intestines and chronic inflammation caused by IBD interferes with, or may completely block, the absorption of vitamin B12, leading to a low vitamin B12 level.  Signs of vitamin B12 deficiency can include a decreased appetite, weight loss, and diarrhea. Injectable vitamin B12 is used to treat the deficiency.  Because vitamin B12 is water soluble, it is very safe and there is no risk of overdose.  Injections are generally given twice weekly to every other week and are easy to learn how to administer.
