Fodder preferences

Annika Michelson, HAMK University of Applied Sciences.

No investigations have been made on Estonian native sheep fodder preferences. In the following some notes about what I have noticed that they like in my own native sheep flock at Kiltsi Meadow:

    • Some sheep in my flock loves apples
    • Bread, especially dark rye bread is very welcome by sheep.
    • Oat flour
    • Meadow hey
    • Leaves: salix, birch, aspen, apple tree, syringa, wild roses.
    • Needles of pine
    • Bark of spruce, aspen, salix and alder.

My old ewe ate one spring a huge amount of Convallaria majalis flowers and leaves as well as Paris quadrifolia, both poisoned plants.

Late summer my sheep did not eat:

    • Euphrasia stricta
    • Trifolium pratenses
    • Achillea millefolium
