Fodder preferences
Annika Michelson, HAMK University of Applied Sciences.
No investigations have been made on Estonian native sheep fodder preferences. In the following some notes about what I have noticed that they like in my own native sheep flock at Kiltsi Meadow:
- Some sheep in my flock loves apples
- Bread, especially dark rye bread is very welcome by sheep.
- Oat flour
- Meadow hey
- Leaves: salix, birch, aspen, apple tree, syringa, wild roses.
- Needles of pine
- Bark of spruce, aspen, salix and alder.
My old ewe ate one spring a huge amount of Convallaria majalis flowers and leaves as well as Paris quadrifolia, both poisoned plants.
Late summer my sheep did not eat:
- Euphrasia stricta
- Trifolium pratenses
- Achillea millefolium
