We Beat the Street is a powerful, inspirational, much needed story that offers hope to individuals from all walks of life. It will motivate young people who feel that they have come to the end of possibility, encourage those who need a boost and blend perfectly with others who feel they are on the right path.
Making a pact to stick together through the rough times in their impoverished Newark neighborhood, three boys found the strength and determination to work through their difficulties in order to complete high school, get through college, and attend medical school together.
Students will read the novel to gain insight on the plot and theme of the story. In order to familiarize themselves with the theme and background of the novel "We Beat the Street", the students will research the three doctors and main characters of the book "We Beat The Street" as well as Newark, NJ and Seton Hall University in order to construct thinking maps.
As an Eighth Grade trip, the students will attend the popular stage performance "We Beat the Streets Outsiders". The performance is based on the popular novel. The play encourages students to stand up against bullying and peer pressure.

The official Movie Trailer.
Using what you learned while reading the book 'We Beat the Street' as well as what you learn from the resources and assignments in this Webquest, you will create Two flow maps. One flow map will be a sequence (from birth to adulthood) of a pact made by one of the three doctors and authors of 'We Beat the Street' while the other flow map will be a sequence (from birth to adulthood) of a pact you make for yourself or with a group of friends.
To provide you with a better understanding of the book's authors and assist you with thinking critically about your future endeavors, you will have four (4) tasks to complete. Each task MUST be completed in the order in which it is assigned. Absolutely NO exceptions!
Task One:
Go to The Three Doctors' website and read up on each of the three doctors. Take notes on each doctor, it will help you complete future tasks. After viewing the website and taking notes, be sure to answer the short answer questions that follow (Please view uploaded attachment: Checking for Comprehension and Understanding).

Task Two:
Visit the website on the city of Newark, New Jersey. Write down at least ten (10) statistics on the city to give you a better understanding of the environment the authors grew up in. Once you have finished, go to City- Data.com and search statistics on your own city. Make sure you write down similar statistical information so you will be able to compare and contrast the two cities.
NOTE: The links are provided below
Once you have taken all of your notes, create a Venn Diagram and input your information. You should have at least fifteen (15) items in the Venn Diagram (at least two similarities and at least two differences)
Task Three:
Explore the Seton Hall University webpage and find the admission requirements for incoming freshman students. Make sure you write down the grade point average and standardized test score needed for admittance. Once you have found these, do the same for a college you would like to attend.
After finding the admission requirements for Seton Hall and a college or university of your choice, complete the bridge map comparing the grade point averages and standardized test scores. An example has been provided for you at the top of the Entrance Requirement Bridge Map document (Please view uploaded attachment: Entrance Requirements Bridge Map).

Task Four:
Your fourth and final task will require you to think critically about your own future, just like the doctors did. With all of the information you have learned from the trailer, the book, and the previous tasks, choose one doctor and create a flow map from his birth to adulthood with at least ten different boxes. Once you have finished this flow map, you need to create a second flow map on your own life (from birth to adulthood) to sequence a pact you can make with yourself or some friends.
NOTE: You have the option to create your own Flow Map based on the provided model or you can print and use the one provided.
