February 26-March3

1. Grammar - read carefully Verb + object + infinitive Groups 1-4

http://usefulenglish.ru/grammar/the-infinitive

Complex object

Конструкция I heard my father say, I heard him say, I saw him leave является разновидностью конструкции глагол + сложное дополнение (verb + complex object). Такие конструкции очень употребительны в английском языке. Они включают в себя много разновидностей и употребляются с разными типами глаголов, с разными нюансами значения. Сложное дополнение в таких конструкциях чаще всего состоит из существительного / местоимения и инфинитива (infinitive). После инфинитива может стоять его дополнение и другие члены предложения. Примеры:

I want Anna to write a report. - Я хочу, чтобы Анна написала доклад.

I want you to finish this work by seven. - Я хочу, чтобы вы закончили эту работу к семи.

I don't want him to stay here. - Я не хочу, чтобы он оставался здесь.

I'd like him to return my books. - Я хотел бы, чтобы он вернул мои книги.

I expect her to arrive at five. - Я ожидаю, что она приедет в пять.

He expected her to tell the truth. - Он ожидал, что она скажет правду.

He didn't expect her to come back so early. - Он не ожидал, что она вернется так рано.

I rely on you to do this work on time. - Я рассчитываю на то, что вы сделаете эту работу вовремя.

She found him to be intelligent and polite. - Она нашла, что он умный и вежливый.

Одна из самых распространенных разновидностей конструкции verb + complex object - конструкция с глаголами чувственного восприятия (verbs of sense perception) hear, see, watch, observe, notice с инфинитивом (без частицы to) или с причастием настоящего времени (present participle). Конструкция с инфинитивом более употребительна, и в ней инфинитив обычно выражает действие, которое закончилось. Конструкция с причастием настоящего времени употребляется тогда, когда нужно подчеркнуть, что наблюдаемое / воспринимаемое действие находилось (или находится) в процессе его совершения. При этом инфинитив в этой конструкции тоже может выражать действие в процессе его совершения. Примеры:

I saw him cross the street. - Я видел, как он перешел улицу.

I didn't see him cross the street. - Я не видел, как он перешел улицу.

I saw him crossing the street. - Я видел, как он переходил улицу.

I saw him smile. - Я увидел, как он улыбнулся.

I see him smiling. - Я вижу, как он улыбается.

I saw a car hit a dog yesterday. - Я видел, как машина сбила собаку вчера.

He heard her say something to that man. - Он слышал, как она сказала что-то тому мужчине.

She heard him hammering in the garage. - Она слышала, как он стучал молотком в гараже.

I heard him lock the door. - Я слышал, как он запер дверь.

I heard her cry. - Я слышал, как она плакала.

I didn't hear her cry. - Я не слышал, как она плакала.

I heard him play the violin. - Я слышал, как он играл на скрипке.

I watched the children playing in the yard. - Я наблюдал, как дети играют во дворе.

I often watch the children play. - Я часто наблюдаю, как дети играют.

Очень употребительна, но трудна для изучающих язык, конструкция have something done (have + object + past participle), которая употребляется, когда вы говорите о действии, которое выполнено для вас кем-то другим. Подробнее о конструкциях have something done, get something done, have someone do something, get someone to do something можно прочитать в статье The Verb HAVE в разделе Grammar, а также в ответе на сообщение от посетителя Marina (от 19.08.08) в разделе Messages, в подразделе Messages about Grammar. (Это сообщение можно легко найти в поиске по сайту по фразе have something done.) Примеры:

I had my suit cleaned and pressed. - Мне почистили и погладили костюм.

Where can I have my car washed? - Где мне могут вымыть машину?

I had my car repaired yesterday. - Мне вчера починили машину.

Have him call me, please. - Попросите, чтобы он позвонил мне, пожалуйста. (т.е. Обеспечьте, чтобы он позвонил мне.)

1. https://www.plot-generator.org.uk/ - try it and print and bring to class what you got

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Basic_Plots

Overcoming the Monster

Definition: The protagonist sets out to defeat an antagonistic force (often evil) which threatens the protagonist and/or protagonist's homeland.

Examples: Perseus, Theseus, Beowulf, Dracula, The War of the Worlds, Nicholas Nickleby, The Guns of Navarone, Seven Samurai (and its Western remake The Magnificent Seven), James Bond, Star Wars.

Rags to Riches

Definition: The poor protagonist acquires power, wealth, and/or a mate, loses it all and gains it back, growing as a person as a result.

Examples: Cinderella, Aladdin, Jane Eyre, A Little Princess, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, The Prince and the Pauper, Brewster's Millions, The Emperor's New Groove.

The Quest

Definition: The protagonist and companions set out to acquire an important object or to get to a location. They face temptations and other obstacles along the way.

Examples: The Odyssey, The Pilgrim’s Progress, The Lord Of The Rings, King Solomon's Mines, Watership Down, Lightning Thief, Apocalypse Now, Avengers: Infinity War.

Voyage and Return

Definition: The protagonist goes to a strange land and, after overcoming the threats it poses to them, they return with experience.

Examples: Ramayana, Alice in Wonderland, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Orpheus, The Time Machine, Peter Rabbit, The Hobbit, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Mad Max: Fury Road, Brideshead Revisited, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Gone with the Wind, The Third Man.

Comedy

Definition: Light and humorous character with a happy or cheerful ending; a dramatic work in which the central motif is the triumph over adverse circumstance, resulting in a successful or happy conclusion. Booker makes sure to stress that comedy is more than humor. It refers to a pattern where the conflict becomes more and more confusing, but is at last made plain in a single clarifying event. The majority of romance films fall into this category.

Examples: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Bridget Jones's Diary, Music and Lyrics, Sliding Doors, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Tragedy

Definition: The protagonist's character flaw or great mistake which is their undoing. Their unfortunate end evokes pity at their folly and the fall of a fundamentally good character.

Examples: Macbeth, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Carmen, Bonnie and Clyde, Jules et Jim, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, John Dillinger, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar.

Rebirth

Definition: An event forces the main character to change their ways and often become a better person.

Examples: "The Frog Prince", "Beauty and the Beast", The Snow Queen, A Christmas Carol, The Secret Garden, Peer Gynt.
