We headed for the nearest town, Heidelberg, to search for a hardware store. Besides not being able to find one, we had arrived far too early for any to be open on a Sunday morning so we continued to Swellendam. Swellendam is a beautiful town resting against the foothills of the Langeberg mountains with many lovely restaurants/coffee shops.
We stopped at the local Spar and bought some Pratleys Putty and stopped at Oppi Stoep Restaurant to repair the BMW and enjoy breakfast. I dismantled the bike to gain access to the cracked flange while Sean sat enjoying a cup of coffee and I sealed the cracks with Pratleys Putty . We spent about 2,5 hours at Oppi Stoep waiting for the Pratleys Putty to set. During this time we re-planned our route to minimize gravel roads to reduce the chances of further damage to the flange. This meant cutting out the Malagas Pont river crossing, Struisbaai, Elim, Caledon and Botrivier reducing the riding distance by about 80km. I started the bike and checked the fuel leak that had reduced dramatically so we continued the journey.
The route was redirected to Robertson, Scherpenheuwel, past the Theewaters Dam, over the Franschhoek pass to the Riverside Cottages on the Bourgogne Wine Farm in Franschhoek. By the time we stopped as the Riverside Cottages, the fuel leak had developed into an even larger leak.
We stopped at the top of the Franschhoek pass to enjoy the fantastic view. before descending the pass into Franschhoek.
First thing Monday morning, I took the BMW bike to the Donford BMW dealer in Stellenbosch for repairs and to replace the rear tyre.
